Relationship between Club length and pivot

This thought has been rolling around in my head for a while so I thought I would put it out here to see if it gets shot down or not so if need be I can clear room in the limited space upstairs for some other more useful information.
Does the length of the club you are swinging effect the length of your backswing/pivot? If you have a 7 iron and complete your backswing is that total length of motion (excluding the circumference created by the difference in the length of club) the same as it would be if you took a driver and completed your backswing?
If you completed your backswing with a 7 iron or even wedge, could you replace the club at the top with a longer club and no compensations would need to be made or do the shorter clubs have smaller/shorter pivots as compared to longer clubs and vice versa.
I guess I am trying to determine if the length of the club will dictate the length of the pivot and you shouldn't try and make a bigger/smaller turn with a certain club but let it happen naturally.
Hope this makes sense.

great question...

I know I sometimes get way over done on the back swing on the driver and fairway woods. My feeling is I should be slowing down a bit when swinging back due to longer club.

Love to have some info to take to the bank here.

Comment by one of the TV pros couple of weeks ago. Pointed out that short/mid irons, the pros generally don't swing back as far (control rather than disstance)..

But then again, there are some pros who smack the hell out of their short irons...
