Right elbow position question....

During the Senior Open I noticed that the mighty walrus Craig Stads would over-flare when his right elbow pointed slightly up and behind him rather than down - I believe AFAIK Johnny Miller commented on it on TV as well.

Why is the 90+ degree angle and the elbow pointing down so important.

In my own swing I have noticed that when my elbow is like Stads I seem to push the shaft out in front of me during the downstroke and it starts an OTT move. I don't know what it does in my normal position, but Mr. Stadler has been very succesful for many years.

So if I want to hit a flare I should let my elbow jut out behind me?

Anybody care to explain to a dumkopf what the right elbow position does?

Thank You

Good observation.

Guys with a steeper position at the top of their backswing (usually faders like Stadler, Nicklaus, etc.) tend to have the "flying right elbow".
