Would strapping your upper right arm to your side and making half pickup/swing moves be a good drill/training aid to get the correct feel of right forearm pickup?

Gregg McHatton, GSED uses such a strap, so maybe that is part of his reason.

I don't really use any training aids besides my coconut anymore when teaching.

Don't know about the strap, but try the Pledge of Allegiance Drill.

To start, stand up with your right hand over your heart, as you would when the National Anthem is being played or you're reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Your right arm is relaxed, laying lightly on your chest.

Let your right arm drop by the force of gravity and allow the right forearm to pivot around the elbow and back up so that that your right hand is up at shoulder level in the "Take an Oath" position.

That motion of the forearm pivoting around the elbow is called fanning and is basically how the right forearm "fans" in the backswing.

Now, do the same drill, only bend over from the hips in your Address position.

This is a great drill for learning the motion of right forearm fanning.

I don't like straps. As rwh stated, it is a fanning back and up. A boy scout salute, a swear on the bible in a court room. I think it is too simple to explain in words. And don't forget, the fanning stretches the left arm across the chest then pulls the chest around. A good drill might be to freeze the left shoulder to develop a feel of NOT taking the club away with the left shoulders but the right FOREARM.

Like you said, this move is SO simple, but seemingly so hard to explain for some reason. Once you get the feel though, look out!! I do exactly what Yoda told me to do regarding practicing this move since it is a learned behavior. The dowel drills are the keys to the kingdom as is Yoda's drill with the right forefinger on the side of the shaft. So simple, but so effective! A little dowel practice every day goes a long way!

Also make sure your right shoulder isn't immobilized. I recently(today) have been able to almost achieve a full swing (hands at the top of my head level)by letting the right shoulder go where it wants to go.Don't take the boy scout salute and other images too literally or else you won't rotate your upper body. For some reason, I had unconsciously restricted my right shoulder's movement and rotation. Same with the right hip. Tension perhaps.
