right shoulder in my right ear

I don't have a great swing, but I think it is getting better, albeit s-l-o-w-l-y. I've been working on a better pivot, etc. Also, I don't flip nearly as much as I used to and there a number of times that I'll make ball-first contact and then and leave a divot.
Regardless, I've noticed that I seem to be "hiking" up my right shoulder and practically sticking it into my right ear (perhaps a little dramatic) during my downswing. I know this is wrong but I'm not sure why I'm doing it. Do I somehow do this when I'm going to flip at it? Am I afraid I'll hit the ground first, so I pull my right shoulder up? Maybe I'm trying to hold it up thinking this will avoid any throwaway? Any thoughts as to why or more importantly, suggestions to get me to stop doing this would be greatly appreciated! Also, it's screwing up my neck :(

Thanks,
p

PM, I saw this recently in a student. He was trying to correct a wide open face and did a similar right shoulder hike at the start of his down swing. I'll bet your clubface is open and your right shoulder doesn't go down the TSP, rather out toward the plane line.

Just for fun: turn the club counter clockwise to 1:00 pm with your "normal" grip. It will look like hell to you. Have some fun trying to keep the ball from going left of your target line. I bet your shoulder starts to "relax" as you'll have to swing more out to the right and get your right should down plane.

Good luck:)

You need to realize HOW FAR FORWARD your lower body has to move to get to a "professional" impact.

And...while this is going on, you need to realize HOW FAR DOWN your right shoulder needs to go.

STEP 1: You need to learn to pose impact very well.

STEP 2: You need to learn to make contact in this location, no matter how slow you have to go!

Thanks to both you. Cmartin, I will your suggestion this week. Brian, just so I understand, how far forward my lower body has to go means more hip bump, correct?

Thanks again! This is the best golf swing info site on the 'net. Really great job, Brian.
