"Right Thumb Off Drill"

It should help...

You can only sense the sweet spot if you approach from the slightly inside with this drill. If you do come over the top, you'll have a great feeling of No Control coming into impact...you might be able to get away with a few, but consistency will be all over the board.

Dobber

it would probably make it worse in some cases, explain later at home. But i'll give you a hint, has to do with clubface control.

That happened to me today. I have a big problem with coming OTT and tried the drill and it did not help at all. I am working extremely hard on the "twistaway" but the downswing is a huge problem. Trying to swing under the stick and trying to get my right shoulder to go towards the ball but I am not having any success. Any suggestions?

Going car shopping, will comment more later. ;)

Are you worried because of how it looks on video?

Or are you actually getting under the sweetspot (with a too open clubface) and THUS coming over your downswing and flipping it.....?

Are you hitting compressed draws or even hooks? This is normal when people get on the NSA Train. (i.e. with a pure-Twistaway clubface control)

...

Here is an old swing video of mine (cover your children's eyes!! ;):)):

http://media.putfile.com/Dome-Swing

As you can see, I used to setup really upright with really bent knees.......

I then made a REALLY inside backswing (product of my setup and also a flat shoulder turn).........

And because I Single Shift naturally (come over my backswing and down the Turned Shoulder Plane like Craig Parry) it looked really really awful.

Now- slicers come over their backswings a lot too......but the difference is that I do it naturally and have always done it and still do it. I don't do it because I'm trying to close a too-open clubface.

In that clip above...........despite the downswing coming hugely over my way too inside backswing........

.......I was actually fighting a HOOK and swinging too far to the RIGHT.

You can see this pretty clearly if you look at the path of the club..........and just the fact that my right shoulder is going DOWNplane indicates I'm trying to tilt and fight off a hook rather than close a too open clubface. A typical slicer comes over it too but their shoulder would go out towards the ball with not much DOWN. From a face-on view, I would have lots of axis tilt and a low left shoulder.........a slicer- not much tilt at all and a very high right shoulder.

Anyhoo- I needed to bend over more and badly needed some Never Hook Again there. Needed a steeper backswing with a "trace a plane line out to left field" downswing.

I did bend over more and did take a dose of NHA. (steeper shoulder turn, more outside backswing, swing more LEFT) I started hitting a huge fade and could not draw it at all.

I have since moved back towards NSA again (flatter shoulder turn, more inside backswing, swing more right) and right now I'm mixing the two depending on the shot.

I've only just started doing the "NSA side of The Matrix" stuff again but I'm hitting it great. I still have my weirdly Arched left wrist at the top BTW. (it does it now even when I try to open the face...it's a little "extra" move after the early swivel in the takeaway)

Birdie_Man, thanks for the response. My ball flight will start left and go all the way left. I presume this is because I now have a closed club face and am also coming over the top. I tend to hit the hozzle or the toe of the club. After watching your video, I am wondering if I maybe do not get enough lift if the arms. My first move as the NSA pattern states is to bend my right wrist back. However after I do that am probably taking it too flat and not getting enough lift so my path down has no choice but to come OTT. Could that be the case? If I incorporate more lift in my swing what should be thought be on the downswing?

Here's what I think

It COULD be the case, but it could also make things worse, depending on your swing. For example, if your arms never "get up to" the turned shoulder plane, you may feel like you need to go OTT to get on plane, so you do. In this case, lifting your arms more may help you, especially if it makes you want to drop your arms on the downswing. On the other hand, if you lift more, and make the same OTT move because of some other reason, then it will make it worse.

Also, just because the ball starts left or the divots are left, it doesn't necessarily mean you are coming "over the top." You may just be more open than tilted, causing a swing that is too far left.

No problem.

OK so you can hit it left......that is a good sign. I assume if you are doing a twistaway and are hitting it left with left curve you can take a descending blow with a divot after the ball...?

Like lookingtolearn said, I think the only other thing really is we need to make sure your clubface is fine and/or you don't still need to work more on NSA and simply TILTing etc. etc.

But if that is in check you very well may be like me and you may be ready to move on and work more on NHA stuff.

And I hope I'm right with my thinking.....and someone who knows more than this rookie (me :)) needs to tell me if I am going in the wrong direction BTW!!.........

But yes.....as for some (NHA) ideas.....use what works for you:

A lifting of the arms in the backswing........showing your underarms in the backswing..................steeper shoulder turn................trace overall more out to in plane line throughout entire swing..............sliding your hips Monty and Freddie Couples style to influence your plane line even MORE (if you need it)........more open body at impact........."lift, drop, and rotate"............rotate the hips OPEN in the downswing while your arms swing left of your left thigh...........watch David Toms..........watch Scott Hoch (thanks Jim)........etc. etc.

(P.S. buy Never Hook Again if you don't have it :))

For me it was (and for some shots still is):

Take it back OUTSIDE with a steeper shoulder turn...........swing LEFT (!) in downswing (but still making sure I have tilt)............maybe with a "drop and pivot" for extra force against the shaft and less clubface closing in the downswing. With this pivot and path this for sure is a "gather up the marbles" type swing with regards to "through impact" clubface control BTW.

All this is gonna probably be weird at first because it's not what you're used to.....but try to do it about as extreme as you can without being ungolflike- if you catch my drift.

You want to "overdo it" a fair bit.....that is the whole idea because you learn super fast this way. Big fades.

Between my 3 degree flat irons and this pattern it is very very hard to miss left. (my miss with this pattern is an over-fade) Even if I throw it away a little it will not be enough to draw it because my plane line is pretty well under my control and I'm gonna make sure it's left enough.

Thanks guys. Looks like I should keep experimenting until I can find what is right for me. I have NHA and just watched it again. I have tried to do the "catch the drop" drill before without much success. I will keep watching it until I am able to do it but do you have any tips as to how I can accomplish the the drill?

Used to be hard to coordinate for me too.....

My favourite is "drop...left shoulder up."

LSU is my fav. downswing thought by far (this is how I "hit it").....

But you can insert your fav. such as "fire the hips"..."hit it with your stomach"..."hit it with both hands"...etc.

("drop...[insert downswing 'hit it' thought]")
