Is it a good idea to try and maintain the bend in the right wrist through impact and beyond? That is to say, once you bend the right wrist on the takeaway and 'maintain the twist,' should I try and keep that wrist bent as long as possible? Or is it supposed to unbend at impact some?
I think this is a great topic. I have no problem maintaining the right wrist bend with the shorter irons, however as the swing gets longer it gets more difficult. Sometime I have to slow down the swing dramatically and it feel like I lose a lot of swing speed in an effort to keep the right wrist bent. Looking at videos it appears to me that the right wrist stays bent, however not to the same degree at impact it is at the top of the swing. I was viewing Ernie Els swing on another website and noticed that the degree of right wrist bend at impact was not nearly what it was at the top of the swing. Also for me when I make a really strong effort to keep the right wrist bend, I get a lot of tension on my hands and forearms. I guess my point is how do you maintain the right wrist bend with minimal effort??
Right wrist bend through impact has been an absolute life-saver for me with the driver. MUCH MUCH more control and no more dying quail snappers. I've always been the one to follow a 275 drive with a low hook on the next whole. With the swing thought of "maintain right wrist bend through impact" I have not snapped one in 4 rounds. I do add to that swing thought, "..and delay left wrist uncocking as long as possible."
I agree that a bent right wrist is an imperative to striking the ball well. For me sometimes it's just difficult to do it without tension in the arms with the longer clubs.. I like Brian's idea in his "flipper" video about float loading. I think I set my hands early and try to keep them in that position which is very difficult.
If you want to keep the right wrist bend - and the pp3 longer - just keep turning that body further through the swing. To exaggerate, try to swing hard all the way up to the sky. Of course in order to do that, you need to let the pivot carry your power assembly much further in the stroke before they are allowed to pass the body.
I can see that from what you are saying and Brian's video. Recently I have been hitting stuff thin when i try to emulate Brian hitting those short pitch shots with this 6 or 7 iron. I might need to get on video to see if I am raising up or if I am still just flipping through.
