Setup elbow pointing downwards vs pointing outwards

I have notice when my elbow is pointing downwards and the pit is facing more skyward then towards each other, it's easier to swing the club. Is this something I should be concerned..or it doens't really matter where the elbows are pointing at setup?

Also, if the club is too closer to the body at setup(if it's less than "pinky to thumb rule) does it matter ?

Elbows (Inside Pits)

This is a good question. I have read and looked at David Blair's discussion on Arm Pits and there direction. I would like to hear feed back from anyone on the Manzella staff on the position of the elbows and where the internal pits should face in the setup.

I don't believe it the same for everybody.

For me and you jen, I think it's a good thing, Johnny Unitas style with the right hand above the right shoulder. IMO I think the pinky to thumb rule makes it easier to get my belt line pointing towards the ball and helps with a straight approach or path to the ball.

I finally found the answer why I'm hitting ball to the right and fat. After weeks, i have tried to find the answer. My right elbow is pointing towards my back instead of down, and thus I can't even do the back and forth swing practice. If my right elbow is pointing down going up instead of pointing back and going up, the swing itself is there. I guess it's over cooked SD. Imagine if your elbow is pointing back on the downswing you really have to til a lot to make it go back to where it's suppose to be. The swing is much easier and the distance is back again.

Congrats jen! I've also been striking much better. Not sure if I fit into a pattern right now but I'm swinging way more left and the low sweeping hooks are just a bad memory for now. I spent a little time with Bmanz and a few things starting clicking for me. Hopefully it will stick and I can see Brian again in a few weeks for a tune up.

Keep me posted on your progress.

the flying elbow requires extra pull to get into the position, i think it works for people who are really laid off, but i'm not laid off anymore so i don't think i need it anymore.

Byron Nelson- elbows out. Ben Hogan - elbows down. Sounds like a case of whatever works for you.

Not to refute your point, but I don't think Hogan really had his elbows as down as he advised. Definitely nowhere near the "elbows bound together" image in Five Lessons.

Check out this video.

Elbows are pretty relaxed. Also notice he's making these swings while smoking a cigarette, which is just plain badass.
