In my lessons, Brian has tried to get my backswing more upright and on plane.
I have always been under the TSP and had some sort of strange downswing move that is way under the plane where I slide my hips forward, tilt a lot and the club path is pretty inside-out and very shallow. I've then "hoisted" the ball with some sort of a block.

I've worked very hard on getting more upright by lifting my arms, yet not changing the backswing plane of my shoulders. The downswing I've worked on covering the ball by tracing the straight line plane with my right shoulder and keeping my hands forward through impact. This has dramatically improved impact and am now regularly taking divots ( a new phenomonon), and carrying the ball about 20 yards farther. There is one catch though. I can keep the ball on the golf course one of two ways: I can hinge then lift on the backswing, then I can have my right arm press down on the shaft through impact with little swivel (I'm guessing the clubface is not very open at the top), or I can hinge, then roll on the backswing, start my downswing and wait for my upper arms to "connect" with my core, then pivot like crazy (this requires some timing, but hits the ball straight and harder than I have in years). It does then swivel after impact. Additionally, I think the harder pivot creating the throwout is a more powerful and repeatable swing. My reasoning is that the body's core doesn't really travel very far during the pivot, and the slinging action it creates by pulling the arms through creates a "cracking the whip" kind of speed, because the arms have to catch up. However, if I don't wait for the upper left arm to connect with my chest, I leave the clubhead behind and block it pretty far right.

I think the action where my right arm controls the swing is less repeatable and less powerful because the arms must travel farther and smaller muscles (mainly my hands) are controlling the arm swing. Is this accurate?

As I've been thinking about this, I'm wondering if my were to shoulders pivot on the backswing on a more tilted (upright) plane, it would get my swing much more upright, and MIGHT require less timing to reconnect the arms and the body.

Can you tell me if this more tilted shoulder plane is on the right track? Does the need to get my arms in front of my body, then pivot on the downswing a sign of something?

Can you help me sort this out?
