Brian, in the post re: Sergio, you mentioned he was playing a shaft that was too stiff for him. I'm curious to hear the opinions of folks on this board re: shaft flex.

More specifically, what do 'you' feel the best approach to fitting flex, and what 'you' feel are the advantages and disadvantages are to playing a shaft that is too weak, or too strong.

Do you feel that most players are using shafts that are too stiff (including many tour/scratch level players)?

How do you feel that tempo vs. distance plays into this equation?

Given someone who is between flex, do you fit weaker or stronger and why?

Yeah, I've been meaning to go on with that Sergio post Edz, but I got busy. Brian, I'm also interested on the effects of not having the right shaft flex.

Many tour players are playing with shafts that are too stiff. The reason is if the loft of the driver is too low, they need a stiffer shaft so that it unloads quicker, thus adding more effective loft when they strike the ball.

I'm really interested in Brian's opinion on this as I'm looking to buy a new set of clubs shortly. How should shaft flex be fitted? Is it about your swing speed? Or is there more to it?

Brian has his shafts done by www.swingsync.com He was asked this question on FGI swing discussions. If my memory is correct it getting your right flex has a large genetic function so once you are fitted with the swingsync system you do not need to get stiffer shafts as you get stronger which was a surprise to me.

"4. Will a person's frequency change from year to year if their ability changes?
No. The clubs will perform better for the golfer as their technique improves. There has been no correlation between clubhead speed, size, or ability of the golfer to the frequency of the shaft needed and preferred by an individual. Several individuals have been tracked over the course of development with no one experiencing a frequency change.

They give you the same iron head with different shafts in . When you get fitted all the rest of the clubs are made to feel and play the same.

“The most Important Thirty-Minutes in Golf”
Proper fitting of Swing Sync clubs take about 30 minutes of your time with our unique fitting approach setting us apart from other fitting systems. You will be fit by certified fitters based on hitting shots under actual conditions with specifically calibrated fitting clubs. Remember, the shaft is the most important part of the golf club and the Swing Sync fitting system is the only fitting system that matches you with your ideal shaft. Golf clubs, like fine suits need to be custom fit to the individual. Only with careful testing and single frequency matching can you have clubs properly balanced, weighted and customized to you.

"After your personal fitting, new clubs are manufactured to meet your individual specifications using an integrated system unequaled by any other golf club manufacturer. The system can also be applied to most existing clubs though the weights of OEM heads may need to be altered to fit the Swing Sync System to obtain the correct balance and feel."

Brian: The thread on hitting and swinginging got me thinking. Does playing with too stiff shafts have an influence on gravitating your stroke pattern towards a hit stroke and playing with too soft a shaft towards a swinging stroke? A floppy shaft would be more given to rope swinging than axe handle hitting so does the shaft you are using/learned golf with have subliminal effect on the evolution of a persons swing? Thanks.

hmmm interesting.... thanks for the info hue.

It looks like they only operate in the States and Canada. What should the rest of us do?

Also, is there some way that I can check my current shaft's with a video camera or something. What should I be looking for?

geoffb : If you go to Chuck Evans web site there is a TGM club fitter there called Paul Smith who is based in Australia and he seems to know his stuff. I think he teaches densikat.
