Shaft Puring... a good value or waste of $$

I've seen these signs about Shaft Puring, whenever I would pass by or visit one of the local club fitters here in Indy. I'd like to get some of the experts opinions here about wherther this really adds value or is just another way to seperate us desperate golfers from our hard earned money. The guy quoted me $50... I then said, that's $50 per set of clubs right??? he answered, no, that's $50 PER CLUB!!!! Double-Ouch!!! At that rate, the cost to purchase my used set of clubs will become insignificant when compared to the total cost of ownership (adjust lie angle, puring of shafts, etc., etc.)
What do you guys think.

Forget the money and think long term!

Henry-Griffitts are the best at it, get fitting for a set of SST pured shafts and you will have a set for life!

Until someone that is independent statitically proves that SST puring has improved the scores of players with similar capabilities as you, I'd save my money. Just have an inch hacked off the set you bought on eBay and add lead tape to the head to rebalance the swingweight (I saw your more detailed post on the TSG board). I've had SST "pured" shafts and would never bother paying for it again. To me it is just "gilding the crowbar": adding a degree of precision that is overwhelmed by other factors.

A neutral spining or puring or whatever you call it is the only one street legal for competition. If the R&A and USGA has noticed it and put some restrictions on it, there is probably
something to it. Best explanation I've seen is on Pat Dempsey's website horsepower golf. I would not buy a wood that was not neutral spined. Call me gullible, but everyone I know both in the flesh and on the internet who knows about clubs recommends it. I can't afford to do it to irons yet, alas.

Obviously, if a qualified clubmaker includes "spine/floing" at no extra charge I have it done (recently I've used Joe Kwok of SF and that is how he works). But I wouldn't pay an additional $50 to have a club "SST pured". I have seen no proof that it is worth it, particularly for a handicap golfer. By the same token, a "blueprinted" set of irons is no doubt "better" than one that isn't, but, again, I can't justify the $40 or so per club that blueprinting would cost. The money can be spent better elsewhere (lessons from Brian, as an example).

$50 a club?!?! That's TOTALLY out of line. Golfsmith charges $10 each club when you purchase from them and I've had driver reshafts done as part of the deal. The only club(s) I would have done are the woods. And even then I'm not sure that I would notice a difference. But it's nice to know that's been done. Anything to add to confidence.

Spining and Floing is different than the SST Pured stuff.

Just find a good clubmaker who will spine/flo your shaft to a neutral spine and you'll be good :)

Gary Usher at Usher Golf in Savannah, GA will spine/flo at no extra charge. He does beautiful work. His website is www.chipandputt.com He will spend all the time you need over the phone or by email to help you out, and is competitive in price with anyone around. Service is second to none. He rates up there with Kwok.
