Shafts too soft for swing

If the shaft on your irons is too soft for your swing and the loading it produces, what will the net effect be? Shots all over the place? Poor face control? Weak ballooning shots?

I was fooling around yesterday hitting irons at the store (TW VR blade 6 iron with Project X 5.5) and found my dispersion was absolutely awful. Was hitting the sweet spot, but the shots were all over the place. Distance was really poor (although I don't trust those monitors anyways). Felt like I was really loading the shaft, but the results sucked.

My normal iron set has X100s.

Just curious.

Probably the indian and not the arrow.

well a shaft that matches x-100's is probably more towards a project x 6.5 rather than 5.5 tbh.

usually if the shaft is too soft, depending on your release type, either it will unbend (make a C shape before impact) too early, and the ball goes high and left, or it wont unbend in time (stays in a "D" bend condition) and the ball goes right.

Lead or Lag in clubmaker terms. Also total weight of the club is affected by the weight of the shaft, and that can also affect your swing. You need to compare or find out the various specs. of the clubs to make a proper choice/comparison. If you like your current shafts and know the specs. go for something with similiar specs. as a starting point, good qualified clubfitter is the answer, before you blame yourself, sometimes it's the arrow.

I know that's true concerning the driver....

so it has to apply to irons....

I've dropped my handicap 5 points from Dec-June. Working on swing and understanding the irons, driver and d-plane has been a big help (all manzella related thru lessons and videos).

I really lost distance on my driver when everything else was longer. Changed drivers...didn't change the driver swing and got the distance back. I think the shaft was the greatest benefit. It feels more "boardy" than my old driver shaft.
