Shanks

I got the shanks! New to this site and just starting using the "bend the right wrist back" on my backswing. I can honestly say I've hit my driver the best that I can remember. In the sweetspot most of the time. Irons getting better too. HOWEVER, my wedges are horrible. Normally that's my best game. Need help ASAP. I've got a 4 person best shot tomorrow. Thanks a lot!

This seems to happen a lot with people starting out with TGM. My way of short term fix is keeping your weight on you heels.

The rest will say...Lag the sweet spot not the hozel...figure that one out. :) I think that means rotate your left arm back towards the target a little sooner which brings the face into the ball first and not the hozel.

I get insta-shanks when I roll it open on the backswing then try to hit or angled hinge thru the ball. I think that's lagging the hosel.

When in doubt, twist it out. Brian's article , Never Slice Again describes the Twistaway. IMHO the best way to learn how to drag the sweetspot instead of the hosel.

The 'buttcheek drill' should work for you. Imagine the ole buttocks is leaning up against a window pane. On the backswing, brush ye ole right cheek against the pane as said cheek moves targetward. On the downswing, brush ye ole left cheek against the pane as said cheek moves away from the target. Voila'-- you maintain the tush line and El Hoselo is asta la vista baby.

My perennial shanks are caused by coming off the tush line and moving ballward so that the hozel becomes 'in-line' with the ball.

What do you use to clean the window?:)

Great visual...just the kinda tip I need, for I too am an occasional shanker!

Cock the club up a bit steeper than you usually do. Often, when I shank, I am taking the club too far to the inside and holding the face open on the downswing. Couple that with the out-to-in path and viola...shank centra.

Thanks guys, I was very pleased with my performance on Friday. I hit some of my best irons ever. Straight as an arrow. I did shank a couple of wedges though. I'm going to give this "new" type of golf a try. Get ready for a lot of questions!!!!!!!

PS I see Brian has some instruction DVD's for sale. What do you guys suggest?

I think a great starting point for anyone is his downloadable video "Confessions of a Former Flipper". Just an overall great video with excellent building blocks for the golf swing. You can really build your game around this video.

Yes this is true...because it teaches you what you need to do in order to get impact sorted out. As Brian says in it "You'll have a nice set of impact alignments you can show off to all your buddies." Confessions is great stuff man.

Get his other vids about hinge action etc. too if you don't understand that stuff. It comes up a lot in discussions around here. I think those are the cheap ones around 3-5 bucks or w/e.

The real trick to not shanking is NOT getting yourself in a spot where you HAVE to get UNDER the sweetspot late in the swing.

Brian, if I pay my $1500 to go to Atlanta in August, is this the kind of instruction I'll be getting? " Here's a clue ", now go figure it out for yourself?

And no disrespect intended, but I see a lot of post like this here. Why not a post like, " Hey all of you newbies that are shanking short irons when doing the wrist bend, here's what's happening? "

"getting under the sweetspot" - that sounds like a very good description of what caused my shanks in the past.

I was way off plane (out-to-in), and the only way to hit the inside-aft (or even back) of the ball was to...well...get under the sweetspot.

Make an exagerated out-to-in swing and aim to hit the inside-aft part of the ball - you'll have to "get under it".

No, that is not the type of instruction you'll get. Brian works with you until you "get it." I know this from personal experience.

I don't see how anybody can shank without making the hozel get closer to the ball than it is at address (assuming the ball is addressed with a square clubface). Therefore, the hozel must move closer to the ball somewhere during the swing. A drastic in-to-out or out-to-in swing path alone should not cause the hozel to to get closer to the ball. Therefore, either your butt comes off the 'tush line', your head moves forward (ballward) or you straighten your arms out further than they were at address. If you don't do those things, then you can't make the hozel reach the ball even if you wanted to.

Arch,
shanker extraordinaire

Start to dislike Brain.... After he came back from the Secretary School for that Short hand course.....

Now what about.

The overall balance is moving to the front, this is why we are shanking...Are you shifting your balance too much? The body balance is in relation the cleaness of impact, if the body balance is behind the ball position (Ball line), then you are getting a fat shot... vice versa.

A longer answer and easier to understanding but the problem is, it might be wrong.
