Short chips

Any technique advice on how to hit short chips when you short side yourself? Tend to decel and chunk it.

Yes. I think the problem is too much handle drag. Should you concentrate on swinging the club head more (and faster)?

Not trying to lean the shaft has helped my short game in all areas. Might try having the shaft more vertical at impact.

IMO, some players who drag the handle in their pitching and chipping tend to have their ball position too far forward. If they make the switch to a more neutral set-up and allow for a bit more clubhead swing, then a ball position that is a little farther back may be necessary to have better low point control.

I wonder, to some extent, if this is why I struggle with a softer, more "up the right arm" type pitch stroke. I don't think I really dragged the handle all that much (even before the new release came out) but I did tend to go down after it and hit a leading edge divot. But I wonder if you are going after more of a 'mid sole' type of shot, perhaps the ball position is more centered?

I think "going down after it" is a necessary move if your intention is to use the leading edge. If your body (or the ball) is in the wrong position you will compensate for it by moving your chest into a position where you can hope to find the low point. Some players dive down, forward or even fall backward through the shot due to improper set up or technique.

Open the face and "stab it." Also if the rough is too thick open face is actually worse because the bounce generally won't get through the rough, you need to use more loft (say lob instead of sand) and make sure you get the leading edge through the rough.

I gotcha....use a hitting technique, more piston than fanning (normally its a blend of the two). More piston motion creates short shots, more fanning, the ball travels more, blend both, and its just a stock chip shot.

Also, mentally, I find that if I preselect my backstroke length AND the amount of follow-through, before the shot, I can relax and execute; I won't decel, nor will I rush the shot since i'm just trying to execute what I have preselected.

You don't want to work under these shots (back up) so if you want to hit it with 75 degrees of loft, open it to 85 degrees at address. Feel a shallow, rounded swing that closes delofts the club to 75 degrees.
