Short Game (Scoring shots) Pitching...

In pitching from say 30 to 70 yards, do you like the wedge to "skim" the grass (using bounce) or dig and take a divot (using the leading edge more)?

Lets assume its a routine shot from the front of the green, flag in the middle and you do not need to go in high, low, etc. Just a standard pitch shot.

depends on the shot.... you want spin? no spin?

If you were playing a standard pitch shot, on a flat green, in calm conditions, to a middle pin with no hazards around the green would you play it wth spin or no spin?

After you answer that, tell us if you would take a divot or brush the grass.

The Manzella "Pitch"

I have worked long and hard to develop my mid-sole no roll pitch shot.

I have it down pat.

This week, in Pittsburgh, working with a student of mine on this shot, he went from "didn't use anything like it" to "so good we were giggling like school girls"
in about an hour.

It is not the only way to do it, but it is a version of what the great short games of the Tours use.

It is so good, it is the cornerstone for the middle of the Matrix.

When I do the "Short Game Matrix" I'll get all of the info on it out, but for now here is one for free:

Add right arm bend, right right bend, right arm rotation the whole backswing and remove it the whole down swing, to the point at impact that has JSUT ENOUGH forward lean to scrape the ground forward of the ball.

Any chance in you letting us know what the ball position for this kind of shot would be? Would it be more under the left shoulder to promote a low point very close to the ball?

I have employed the mid bounce chip/pitch since Brian taught it to me 2 yrs. ago........In short that shot transformed my short game. I went from a leading edge chipper/pitcher with little control (but a dead flat left wrist!!!!) to someone with a decent short game.

I am not a great putter. I am not a great ball striker (but believe me, vastly improved). But I shoot a lot of good scores because I know how to execute this one shot from distances ranging from 10 to 40 yards. My par 5 birdie percentage and up and down percentages went up a lot.....I am a decent enough putter to convert most of the time from 6 feet and in, which is usually the range I am in if I execute the mid bounce pitch correctly.

Somebody help me, I don't quite understand this quote by Brian.

"Add right arm bend, right right bend, right arm rotation the whole backswing and remove it the whole down swing, to the point at impact that has JSUT ENOUGH forward lean to scrape the ground forward of the ball."

I think I got right arm bend, not sure what right right bend is, and if I rotate on the backswing, but don't on the downswing, won't I have a wide open face?

I think I'm missing something.

Tball,

I'm not 100% sure, but I bet the "right right" should read "right wrist" and that the "remove it" means to re-rotate and unbend the amount you did on the backswing.

I haven't tried this but plan to this evening. I don't have as good a command of this length shot as I should and have never been able to execute that "one-hop checker" very well. I can sort of see how this method would work.

Hinge action

Brian: Are you using horizontal or vertical hinging with this shot?
Weight forward all the way back and through?

So far (so far) I pitch it my best using twistaway in the backswing and an open clubface at address. (rotated open within the grip)

(this is not my "normal" full shot procedure BTW)

Best used with a flatter shoulder turn.

Brian.........you have any of your better-playing students doing anything like this?

(just curious on it)
