Is there way to tell if your shoulders are turning correctly in the backswing? I feel like mine aren't turning down and around enough, more just around - almost like a baseball swing.

But....

Ok,

PGA TOUR players use—for the most part—a Shoulder Turn that is steeper than the one I would teach to a large portion of the golfing world.

Why?

Because they can still get THEIR RIGHT SHOULDER DEEP ENOUGH!!!

Because they STILL don't reverse pivot doing it.

Because they can pass "Manzella Test #1 & #2" in their sleep.

Manzella Test #1

Place three balls in a row, 90° to the plane line, about 3 inches apart. Hit the middle ball.

You pass if the "divot" or scrape is in front of the line.

Manzella Test #2

While doing #1, you can hook the ball (on purpose) three straight times.

:)

If you can pass those tests...you may need a steeper shoulder turn. You may not.

Great question. I think about this all the time. I was going to ask Brian if the LEFT shoulder should trace the straight line plane.

What's the driving range mat version of these tests?

In my estimation it is difficult for most non tour caliber players to make a steep shoulder turn on the backswing without messing up their spine angle and/or axis tilt is so doing, often leading to a reverse pivot. Possible, but tough for most to pull off. Of course, I would bet 90%+ of such golfers could not pass Manzella test #2, so I do not read Brian as recommending it to too many people.

I passed #1 but can't hook it. Did this with my normal turn. What next pro?
