Shoulder Turn and Distance

I have a tendency to get lazy with my shoulder turn on the backswing. Any idea how much distance you lose with say a 45 degree shoulder turn versus a 90 degree turn? Maybe some of our scientific-minded folks like Mandrin could help me out here.

The shoulder turn is very over rated as a distance producer. It should only turn as far as the hands "pull" them.

But...if you can pull them really far, you have more time to generate speed, as well as more potential strength/

At the very least, shouldn't one get the left shoulder underneath the chin, as it looks like you do in your swing .gif? That way, you get enough up, and not too much in.

I agree with BRIAN, if you watch the long drive pro's they have no initial shoulder movement at the start of the downswing . Actually they want to hold there shoulders back to get to the inside of the ball. The shoulder movement aids in club path .

I have always assumed one actively rotated the shoulders in the backswing along with arms and hands moving up. Am I misunderstanding what Brian means by "pull"?

The shoulder turn can increase power but at the price of a consistent plane.
Havery Penick, "son, the woods are full of long hitters." or something to that effect.
