So tell me why

I play with two guys who hit it good with a very unorthodox swing. Here is what it looks like:

They take the club back low and flat; there is no attempt t lift the arms above parallel.

There is a significant shift behind the ball.

They throw the body forward, arms apply power, little wrist cocking, looks like everything moves as a unit - body, shoulders, arms, club.

They are totally on the right leg and using that as a launching pad for the rest of the body.

No evidence of uncocking wrists.

Solid contact. Ball goes straight and long (for old guys).

I see body, arms, wrists, hands as a solid, concrete unit.

Of course, a lot more be happening that I cannot see.

It looks like: OK my club is going in a direction that will get to the ball. Hold everything static and throw everything I have at it.

Discuss.

I just vomited. But I bet they looked different when they were younger. Their older bodies are probably trying to do everything they once did, but just don't have the flexibility.

My old swing. large in tugging and void of any parametric, was aided with a huge lateral shift targetwards. Trust me there is no desire to go back.

Probably true Lindsay. But contact is sweet and they are happy. So should I tell them about parametric acceleration, torque about the coupling point, alpha, gamma, beta, releasing the hands, or that their swing is "unorthodox".

Should I spoil their fun?

What is golf about?

All those guys need is 1.21 gigawatts, a flux capacitor and a Delorean. I don't get half the things written on this site anymore, but I do get Spiderman.

No! Why would you even think about telling them that? In fact I refuse to fit them as well, they are so adjusted to both swing and material that you should never mess with it unless they tell you that they have a real desire to change

"what is golf about?"

I guess that's the big question.

I used to think everyone was like me- Practice as much as possible, don't limit expectations on achievement, enter as many tournaments as you can afford on whatever level and try to win.

BUT, and I am trying wrap my brain around this, some folks just wanna have fun and gamble a little with the fellas, have a couple of pops while getting away from life a bit.

I used to try to help everyone MAXIMIMIZE their play, but most people really cant justify the time and effort it takes to get better and I don't fault them. I guess you let them do what they do until they ask for your opinion. Then let'em have have it!

I recognize the symptons, Lindsay - continuous improvement, lot of practice, constantly trying new things and always looking to give advice ... but with the help of everyone on this forum I am starting to groove a swing that is reliable, has reasonable distance, and solid contact. If I am hitting it good I will occasionally air it out; but dial back immediately if things get wonky. I don't know what the swing looks like and don't want to know. If there is ever another lesson with BM I will need his advice on small improvements in this swing and short game.

Yes, your right - couple of pops, few jokes, a small bet, and the spontaneous friendship that golf seems to promote even with people you don't know. I think I am getting close to that space.

It is actually hard for me to understand someone who would play golf regularly and not want to get better. Although I can see guys who only play a few times a year not caring if they get better. I go bowling maybe twice a year and if anyone starts talking with me about lines or arrows I just tune them out.

The guys that kill me are the ones who play every week and have the same issues every week and get angry but do nothing about it. Kind of like having a stone in your shoe and refusing to stop walking long enough to take it out. Yet bitching about the stone in your shoe.

Some golf buddies ask me about the "scientific stuff", and I just tell them it's useless without studying and practicing a lot. End of discussion.

Most everybody is searching for that "magic golf tip" that will help them avoid paying the price of painful practice. Now we have "scientific golf tips" ... that most can't understand. All they want to know is "what should I feeel to make it right?".

Brian and his instruction team are attempting to reduce the science into something palatable, understandable and applicable to a homemade swing. Gonna be interesting .....

The two ladies in their cart behind me with some bottles of rose might disagree

Mondieu, Frans .... Americans might think French women playing golf have bottles of roses with them...!!!!

You should have said "bouteilles de vin rosé" .... btw, did they drink from cups or did they just swig if from the bottles...??!!!

This is still France, so no "swig from the bottle" but no crystal glasses either, more the good insulated cups that keep drinks cold the entire 18 holes :D

I only wash my feet in French rosé... I prefer the Italian rosé, more body. As for French femmes, I hear they are experts at "swigging" with leurs bouches. ;)

Tasteful as always Steve.

BTW it is Mon Dieu. Lower case shows a lack of respect and He may not appreciate it.

p.s. I didn't know you couldn't speak French.
