Speed vs. Power?

This may be a dumb question but what's the difference between speed and power? You hear people say that todays game has more power in it. But what does that really mean? I really have no idea (obviously).

Its just TV announcer BS... But want a technical answer? First think in terms of units.

Time - T
Distance or length - L
Mass - M

These are the three so called kinetic Units from which a fourth is derived:

FORCE = M * A where A is rate of change of velocity or acceleration.
FORCE = M * L / T^2

These "kinetic units" are called different things depending on which system of units is being used. Most of the world (for good reason) uses the SI or International system of units wherein the kinetic units are respectively: seconds, meters, kilograms and for force: Newtons. In some places we still us the so-called english or US customary system of units where the kinetic units are respectively: seconds, feet, slugs (or sometimes pounds as in pounds mass lbm) and for force: pounds (as in pounds force lbf). See why SI is better?

SPEED is velocity without regard to an associated direction (its a scalar as aposed to a vector)

SPEED = L / T (feet per second) or (meters per second)

POWER is the rate at which work is done or WORK per unit of TIME. WORK is FORCE through DISTANCE

So in terms of Units

POWER = WORK / TIME
POWER = FORCE * DISTANCE / TIME
POWER = (M * L / T^2) * L / T which has units of (Newton Meters per second) or (Foot Pounds per Second)

Notice both speed and power have the almost the same building blocks (M, L and T)? The only thing different is M or mass. So when someone says today's game has more power in it, they might as well be saying today's game has more MASS in it... Oh really? I don't think so.

The only thing that matters (besides face angle and path) is how much clubhead speed a golfer has developed at the time of impact.

Ok, speed is how fast you can swing the club
Power is only generated by having the correct positions.
I can take someone who has poor body positions(concept) and have them hit the ball with great speed-result is very poor.
I can take someone who has great body positions and have them hit the ball with balanced swing-result far surpasses the other jerk.

Why is the other guy a JERK? I use to be the first guy, now I take the 2nd guys lunch money!

I would rather start off as the first guy because he probably needs a few upgrades, and he's ready to play the modern game. Add a short game and he's money. Distance makes this game so much easier...

Is it more accurate to describe the modern game of golf as a distance game or a momentum game?

Hawkeye,

This should be an easy analogy. For speed and power - think SEC football. For speed, think Mcfadden. For power, think Tebow. For both, think Dorsey. Plenty more examples, but you get the idea :p (sorry, couldn't resist with your avatar and all).

I like to think about speed with the driver, and power when hitting out of thick rough - and unfortunately, usually in that order.

Great Post SMFIGJAM, I completely agree with you :eek:
My golf money comes from the 2nd guy too :D

You know I figured somebody would post something like that. All I'll say is that IA put some good old fashioned football into teams like FL and LSU not too long ago on some Jan bowl games.

BTW - Tebow is one of my favorite players and I've been saying for a long time (well before he won his 1st) that he will win 2 Heismans.
