spinning left heal

hi all. here’s the deal. i have 4 yrs of college football to thank for a bad lower back and sore hips. i'm like broken down race horse. the hips hurt all the time, which in my opinion underscores the value of single malt scotch. oban, being the weapon of choice.

to help minimize my back pain during the golf swing, at address i have the toes of my left foot (i’m a righty) at 10 o’clock and the toes of my right foot are at 1 o’clock. from the point of contact, when the club impacts the ball, i do my best to copy the action of zack johnson. i generally finish high. however, in doing so my weight tends to be middle-forward on my left foot, which causes my left heal to spin counter clockwise. the tighter my back gets the more my heal likes to spin. i’ve started monkeying with some sean foley, start left, stay left and finish more left ideology. i like the quality of contact i’m making, but i’m losing at least one-two club lengths distance and my left hip hurts. any ideas?

you'll get your distance back, real fast, and you will lessen the pain your current swing is inducing.

It will help you a lot and it might save you some medical bills in the long run.

Stack and Tilt, never has and never will make ANY sense to me. I don't know ANYONE who gained ANY distance with that method.

pivoting like crazy is crazy. there are a lot of golfers around here who spent a lot of time working on and thinking about their pivot. mostly wasted time, myself included in that mix.

I think Mike Jacobs or another instructor called it reverse engineering... SO TRUE.

Wow, Leftjab... you are a glutton for punishment... and a bad golfswing may further aggravate your 'bad lower back' and 'sore hip(joints?). Overstressing your body in football has produced chronic injuries that may get worse with time. Have you obtained an opinion from your doctor whether you should be attempting to play golf in your condition?

The human body has not evolved for rotation, only to walk and run straight ahead. Twisting and torquing your body as in a golf swing creates high peak stresses in your lower and upper back, hip joints and in particular in your knee joints with shear... not to mention your shoulder joints too. The human body is called upon to perform strange manoeuvers for a golfswing!

If you're taking analgesics to dampen the pain from sore joints so you can try to play golf, that is not a good indicator for you. Neither is popping pain pills after a round of golf. Practice is particularly punishing.

If you still want to conquer golf, I suggest you seek the advice of a qualified teaching pro like our Brian Manzella or one of his associates. Brian has played football and I suspect he has an understanding and even empathy for your body problems... and will tailor a golfswing that will help mitigate your physical problems. Don't play in pain just to "play".... it's not recommended nor wise. Seek professional golfswing help.

oban's fine. but the islays are worth looking into. all that iodine must really amp the medicinal value.

If Leftjab is driven to drink to play golf, surely that must be wrong. Let's hope he doesn't a need shot mid-round from that cute girl cruising the course in her bar-cart!!!

+1 to this. I played 10 years of football (yes I know I'm from the UK, no I don't mean soccer) and my back is pretty shot. The new release is a LOT better on the back - I'd recommend it just for that, even if it doesn't make you any longer or straighter (which it will!)

+another one for the release. I hate to say it but it is so much easier on the body to not pivot like crazy it is almost too easy. Now I have taken to climbing trees between shots.(kidding about the trees)(sort of)

What about throwing a spear or rock, Steve?

i'm smart enough to know that at my age i stand a better chance buying her the drinks.

don't be mistaken, i enjoy a decent dram when my back's not bothering too.

i'm uncertain as to what you mean by pivoting... that the proper name for the action i've described?
