Stance width?

After still hitting on the toe after checking posture, plane, impact position, left arm straight at impact and so on and so on I was honestly thinking of taking a long break but then I remembered Brian said my stance was too wide. So with my 8 iron I brought my feet even with my shoulders and BAM, center contact and divots past the ball again. Yepee I can make contact again. Now my question is if with a wide stance you are lower to the ground why can't I take a divot or make center contact? It's the opposite of what I would think would happen. Maybe my body thought I would hit it fat and raised up to avoid that from happening? Someone explain please. Keep in mind my feet were 6 inches past the shoulders with a 8 iron.

The wider the stance the further foward you are effectively making the ball position. The narrower the stance the further backward you are effectively making the ball position.

Put yourself in a position so that with whatever stance width you choose to have, at impact fix, you can physically get your body into that position to correctly hit the ball.

I have a student who likes to use a very wide stance which is fine, but always has the ball way too far foward (just inside left shoulder). Because of the wide stance it's very hard to PHYSICALLY get into a position to correctly hit the ball with it that far foward and the stance that wide. So in this case my student has 2 choices:

move the ball back in their stance
narrow their stance

Either one would work.

I find that the wider your stance the less desire to move virtically with the hips and shoulders. Maybe that is why you can't take a divot.

This statement is relative only to a ball positioned just inside the leading foot, where only the trailing foot is moved away from or towards it.

Learn to position the ball relative to your body, which has a constant width, and there will be no further problems.

Excellent point and well taken. Sorry for the simplicity with omission.

No apology necessary, Spike. I was not admonishing, just offering what, to me, has proved to be a more certain procedure.

stance width

Well if you want serious inches. 14" inside measurement for the driver. Or never every wider than your hips or you might as well take up darts.:D
