Standing up during backswing. Hitting it fat and thin.

Hi!

I'm a huge fan of the Manzella method and the forum. Been lurking around for quite some time now, but haven't felt the urge to post anything until now.
I picked up golf in the fall of 2008 and haven't had the time to practice nearly enough due to kids etc. (6-7 rounds last year).
As we videotaped my swing yesterday with my iPhone, it became clear to me that I stand up quite a bit during the end of the backswing. I figured this could be the cause of me regulary hitting it fat and thin. I probably have massive amounts of other problems in my swing too (popout?). So without further ado, here's my 5-iron swing from yesterday:

I'd like to hear what you think I should work on and how to eliminate that up'n'down movement. Bear in mind I'm a newbie, so be gentle ;)

Best regards,
Robin

Here's a very easy way to start - swing a little bit shorter.

Your backswing should stop when your body stops turning, your arms keep going higher and you get pulled out of your posture to get them there. If you can feel that your backswing is shorter; it stops when your chest stops turning, you will probably find that you don't move up and down as much.

I doubt that you will hit the ball any shorter, and you'll probably find a lot more control too. There's my quick view-and-opinion.

IMO the late stand up move is likely due to an inadequate pivot. I suggest more core turn early with the handle passing close to the right leg in the takeaway.

generally it means body is telling you one thing (Flexibility) and the brain is telling you another (i think i can i think i can ;) )

Only turn as much as the body will allow. Otherwise you will most likely sway, reverse pivot or who knows what else and have all kinds of contact trouble like...hitting it fat and thin. :)
