Starting from the pre-set position

For the entire 2003 golf season, I hit all full shots starting from a pre-set position at address. Some call it the 6/100's position. Mac would call it P-2. Basically, the hands are between the address position and the right thigh, with the left wrist cocked so that clubshaft is parallel to the ground and the target line. Angle between the left arm and clubshaft is about 110 degrees.

In the past week, I've returned to this method and the results are nothing short of extraordinary. Every shot goes straight and there is no loss of distance.

I like this method because all you need to do from there is use your pivot to take the club to the top. The hands and wrists are very passive (might get another 10-20 degrees of cocking action). The left wrist starts flat and stays that way. It's so easy to get the club on plane. All of the mistakes that can occur in the first half of the backswing are eliminated. On the downswing, I try to swing through the 6/100's starting position. If I could use one word to describe this method, it would be "simple". It feels like you're Iron Byron.

Nevertheless, I'm interesting in the thoughts of those folks on this site who are more knowledgeable than me about TGM regarding the pros and cons of starting the full swing from a pre-set position, especially anyone who has experimented with this. I can't find any downside, except for the weird looks I get on the first tee, which stop once they see the ball in the middle of the fairway.

i agree this is a very good drill and sets you up with a very square clubface, and keeps you right on plane. i did this drill alot working with mac trying to get that p2 position, the main benefit i believe of this drill is you get everything set without your arms moving much so the arms dont outrace the bodyturn as most average golfers do, so at the top you are more in sync. the only downside i have found is the rythymm you lose by starting from a stop you really have to concentrate on your tempo and moving your weight left before the end of your backswing then just guide the hands down plane. I saw suzanne petterson play in the solheim last year and this was how she played every shot. there is alot of different ways to take the club away but i think this is probably the simplest and repeatable even though i dont do this now every swing i make i try to get my hands to pass through that point at p2. Btw the best way to do this drill is to put a shaft in the ground about a couple feet behind the ball on the target line on the same angle as the shaft at address than as you take it back make sure you glide your shaft on the one in the ground to p2 same as vj. this will get your hands in enough because you can do the p2 drill and be square to the target but have your hands out to much and then go ahead and hit the ball you should miss the shaft on the downswing by at least 8 inches or so.

I did something a bit like this out today and shot really well. I felt much more solid on my backswing. I did it more dynamically though, starting the swing setting the wrists back then right hip back. Really good drives and fairway shots. Now I need to get back to my disgraceful short game. :(
