Stationary Head on Downstroke

Theory first. Tripod concept: Head precisely between your Feet from Address to Follow Through. If you draw a triangle joining up the heels and your head, it should form an isoceles triangle (i.e. 2 equal length sides).

There are very good players with Head that dips down and to the left (when looking at them face on) during the downstroke. Examples: Tiger Woods and Mike Finney (mikestloc).

There are also very good players with an absolutely Stationary Head. Examples: Ben Hogan and Lynn Blake.

Now I want this discussion to be about the Stationary Head on the DOWNSTROKE. So please don't talk about Head movement depending on Shoulder Turn Takeaway or Right Forearm Pickup, etc. Also, I don't want this discussion to turn into a debate about whether the head should or should not remain stationary depending on physical build, etc. For a geometrically correct stroke, it SHOULD be stationary from address to follow through. End of story. No debate.

WHY do some players head dip down and to the left?
There SEEMS to be a correletion between how hard you swing and how far your head dips. Are there any other factors???

HOW do you maintain a stationary head on the downstroke without messing your swing up? Just thinking about keeping it still DOES NOT WORK!

Brian -- your real world teaching experience may shed some light on this matter.

If Tiger's neck was parallel or close to parallel with the ground, his head wouldn't dip on the downswing or would be much less than occurs now.

Byron Nelson stated that his head did not dip but rather his needs flexed. In other words the distance from head to knees never changed.

Using the swing sequence of Hogan in the Venturi Analysis- his head does not stay "absolutely stationary"- the movement of his head in that sequence is significant.

As far as the dipping, more face down at address, less at impact.

Nelson dipped. Period.

Mike O is also dead on.

Hear is the cold hard truth: IF THE HEAD IS STATIONARY DURING THE IMPACT INTERVAL, IT MATTERS ONLY IF THE HEAD WAS 'PUT INTO' THE RIGHT 'SPOT' AT IMPACT for precison.
