How do i stop holding the face square or steering thru impact. i tend to hit a lot of thin shots that go right, only make divots sometimes. could i be swinging too far right? My flat backswing probably doesnt help matters. any thoughts?

Sound like you are below plane, AND you don't rotate the clubface to square-ish soon enough in the downswing.

Rotate the left arm LESS going back, and more coming down.

And you need to get the clubhead to get outside your hands SOONER on the downswing.
