It seems common to see professional players who have strong grips who also have fast, rotating hips with relatively little lateral movement. These players are often called “body releasers”.
What is it that makes fast hips compatible with a strong grip?
From what I’ve read and experienced
Fast, rotating hips with relatively little lateral slide, coupled with a more centred ball position, allow the hands to get back to the ball quicker, permitting less time for the strong grip to close the clubface too much. Too much lateral movement delays the moment of impact and allows the clubface more time to close.
I was thinking though that more lateral hip slide could potentially create more axis tilt which in turn would produce a more in-to-out delivery path which might prove a valuable compensation for a strong grip.
Other options might include more lag and/or higher hands at impact to offset the tendency of the hands to over rotate through impact much in the style of Lee Trevino.
The players are described as “body releasers” as to some extent they hold back the release with the hands fearing a violent hook.
Look forward to your comments.
