Study swing sequences of Watson for sweep release examples

Cool cool......Weiskopf is close too I think eh? Not many frames in that pic but it ain't Snap (very late) that's for sure.

I have ideas.....but what to look for on differences between a flip and a Sweep Release then?

Hi,

At frame 10.5 where the right hand is parallel to the ground, some golfer like VJ Singh has the club shaft in line with the right hand (i.e. parallel to the ground also). Is this an optimum position? Some friends are telling me the clubshaft should be pointing skywards.

Anyone has any idea? Or are both equally good position?

cheers,

daniel

I am not sure there is a general rule. All I can think to say is that it must depend on the player (how late or early your release is etc.) and also the shot. (high/low/draw/fade)

I DO know that you surely don't wanna flip it. All the flippers will have the shaft pointing to the sky earlier. (also will be towards the early side for a non-flipper hitting a higher shot)

Opposite is true for a good player playing a real low "punch" fade or something with more forward shaft lean at imapct.

Maybe Brian can comment further for you on whether there is anything else to know.

...

BTW it may also be worth mentioning that Vijay is a bit freako with that post-impact right hand off the club thing. Not sure if that has to do with it.

What *I think* you can really see there is how he holds his left wrist flat throughout the DS. I do this whist pushing down with my right hand by feeling as if push my left fingers down onto the club to hold on and drag the twistaway through impact but it looks as if he does it more through his pivot?

How does one consciously execute a sweep release? It is all I can do to maintain a flat left wrist and not flip it. Things are moving so fast in my swing the release seems to happen on its own. Do all of you think about the type of release you are using?

I wouldn't worry about what type of release you have, as long as it works and the ball is doing what you want it to do you will be fine.

One of Brian's start pupils (the girl who won that recent tournament) has a sweep release with a circle delivery path. Not the most conventional or maybe "pretty" looking thing on the downswing but man does it work.

Thanks Birdie_man, I'll take note. After all the recent discussions here, I'm now not too sure if I'm still a flipper or not..

You are a flipper if....

1. You can't make a divot in front of the ball

2. You can't hit it solid off of hardpan

3. You blade short wedge shots

4. The clubhead passes your left arm PRIOR to impact

Hi Brian,

Thanks man. From your description, I may not be a flipper after all. ;-)

Just to reconfirm. I'm 38 yrs young, 5 ft 9 in, bulky and inflexible. I hit a 7 iron about 150 yards carry. Is that a reasonable distance?

And thank you for NSA 2.0 and twistaway.

cheers,

daniel
