Swing Speed/Shaft Selection

My swing speed is somewhere between 125-130. Do I need an extra stiff shaft for my driver? Sometimes I hit the crap out of it when I add lots of toss with my swing, but I hit a lot of pop ups and spinny shots too. My irons are standard stiff but I don't have a problem with them usually.

Actually I haven't measured my swing speed in a while, so I'm not sure exactly if it'd be that much still. I hit a smooth 9 iron about 165, with a pretty high trajectory if that is any indication of swing speed. My driver feels pretty noodle-like compared to my irons.

No, It was some club fitting thing. I think it was bridgestone. Maybe they juice the numbers or something I don't know? I hit my driver about 320-ish when I hit it good, but it's been pretty spinny lately. I'm just wondering is it time to go X-stiff?

Probably maybe yes of course. There's a lot more to it, though. Torque, kick, etc. You would probably do best to find someone who really knows what's going on regarding club fitting. I think the noodle feeling compared to your steel shafted irons might be too much torque with the driver. Might even be worth checking out your iron shafts too, as you might be missing out on them even though you've kind of "learned" how to swing with them fine.

From Ping scientist Phil Woods at ASII (paraphrase):

All else being equal, stiffer/softer shafts do not increase clubhead speed.

Choose the shaft that is easiest to consistently time.

The secret is...

Finding the right combination of frequencies for the butt, middle, and tip sections for your specifc swing. You need a profile that can be cycled through out your swing so that it complements your timing and speed. Not always an easy find when you get north of 120 mph. The biggest hurdle is often finding a feel that you find complimentary and pleasing. All that being said, looking for profiles in the X range will probably be the best place to start.
