swing speed stiff shaft vs regular

I just got back from a long long business trip and vacation (4 month)

I went to golf smith tried some of the new drivers that came out. My swingspeed is now 90-92, should I still use stiff shafts?

I tried the regular shaft it always have a big draw. Stiff shaft slightly less draw. But base on my swingspeed I should use regular shaft right?

According to True Temper, your staff stiffness should be based on your downswing shaft loading profile and not only on swing speed. Here are three typical shaft loading profiles as determined scientifically on their ShaftLab apparatus... two-peak, one-peak, ramp-up loadings.

swingType_singlePeak.jpg

swingType_ramp.jpg

The scientific study backing up these curves is in Science and Golf II (1994): The Dynamic Performance of the Golf Shaft During the Downswing - J.H. Butler and D.C. Winfield (both of TrueTemper)

Unfortunately, the ShaftLab apparatus has been discontinued by TT due to it's fragile nature causing it to malfunction and requiring costly repairs. It didn't seem to catch on with the golfing public either, who preferred to depend on feeel and results.

Nevertheless, can you relate your downswing loading feel to any of these loading profiles? I believe only the ramp-up loading required a stiff shaft because of the vigorous application of loading force late into the downswing. The one and two peak loadings could indicate a regular shaft stiffness.

Honestly, just to a competent fitter. Swing speed doesn't give you the answer, it's just a component in a range of things. Where's Frans when i need him...

Seriously! Anyways, what is the best way to get fitted? try out different shafts on my own, or go to a fitting center? most fitting center here doesn't have a driving range, which to me is pretty useless.

If you don't have a trackman or flightscope, it's just a pure guess. I mean i can "kinda" tell by the ballflight but that's after numerous fittings and seeing numbers and relating that to what i see. Most people don't really know what high launch/low spin looks like; most think it's "too high."

i do like swinging with the lightest club possible, but when i can't feel the club head i'm in trouble

Feel the head normally is related to swingweight and not just total weight. However a very soft section in the shaft can also give a kind of kick feeling in the swing and that can also be regarded as "feel the club head". So a competent fitter will find out for you and inform you what feeling belongs to which fiting parameter AND inform you which good feel might generate very bad results ;) (things like lightest club possible)

why? Because you swing different inside? Or do you think that the initial ball and club data is only correct after 200 yards ball fligth? Or you keep adjusting you swing whenever you see your own ball flight? If the later then DON'T fit outdoor!

But think about it : Outdoor, wind/rain/range balls etc....

If you still don't like it, then tell the fitter you want to test the club also outside, he will not mind at all.

PS Here most drivings ranges will not allow a fitter from outside to fit on their range even when there is no fitter at that range present.

Frans, isn't angle of descent, an important consideration to optimize clubs, only available outoors?

In reference to Frans indoor/outdoor thing, for some reason, i always always measure slower ball speed indoors; no idea why.

I also tested it after complains. And I found that not being the case. Maybe it has to do with the size of the cage?

I always have voice activated for both smashfactor and carry, to give direct feedback. also I still use the "old" launch software as that displays the ball flight which is then projected in the backpanel of the cage.

same thing here Jim...

As far as the original question, I have a bit of a take on it. I have right around the same ss as Jen, but I have a VERY short backswing, quck transition and full, hard follow through. Never been a good driver of the golf ball, until this year. And the big difference this year is I went with a 12 degree stiff shaft driver! Seems to me that tempo / transition times are as much, if not more important, than ss. The weird thing for me is, if I have a shaft that is too flexible, I lose it to the right. Of course, i tend to be a fade player, so I guess that makes sense...

@BIGBALL .... Just guessing, but do you have a stout build, a negative or descending AofA... and a downswing shaft loading profile that could be a "ramp up" style as shown in the loading curves I previously posted on this thread, thus requiring a stiffer shaft?

+1

I cannot get close to the same head or ball speed I do outdoors, even when the only goal is to swing "as fast". I have an unshakeable feeling of breaking something indoors. Mom's words of "don't play inside, you'll break something" haunt me every time.

Absolutely Steve. I'm a big guy, 5"11, 235 - but not "fat". I am wide across the shoulders and chest for sure. ( former powerlifter ) I hit up on my driver, but definitely down on my irons, although i couldn't tell you aoa numbers. I am a much better iron player than driver, at least I was in the past!
