Swing thought/drill that has helped a lot

Hey guys I just wanted to pass this along to you underplaners specifically. After another up and down spring I called Brian about 1 month ago and we just visited about some ideas in general. He encouraged me to spend some time doing the back and forth drill, which I did diligently. My tempo and pivot improved drastically, but I was still having problems getting under it, especially on shots that I went after.

The swing thought is this:

Add a little twistaway on the downswing at the precise time you 'step on the left foot' of the back and forth drill. This is magic. I can even do this with the NHA downswing and hit a little cut when I need to.

Brian, you are the man.

Just another satisfied customuh!

Back and forth drill is the thing I do all the time, especially if I get out of sorts and especially if I get on the course and start struggling.

jbrunk, is the twist anything like the NSA move (4 or 5 on the NSA list) where you feel like you hook the sweetspot on the downswing?

Absolutely.

I hear you big guy. When I try to "get after it", I still get the push fade with NHA.

That's because when u go after it; the force acting on the shaft is greater and it opens (lays off) the left arm wedge more and thus gets you more under it than you would have been. You have to resist this.

It took me way too long to understand this, but recently seeing myself on vid and seeing everything else where I wanted it, I knew this was the last piece. This was quite a change too. A half bucket of wedges is all it took and then straight to the course.

So how do I "get after it", the correct way? Thanks

My 2 cents on hitting it harder when you need the extra umph. I take Jacks advice, make a fuller backswing turn.

You have to find a way to resist the club from opening more; adding some twistaway is an easy way.

The other day I was out and probably hit some of the longest drives ever. I had the ball off my left heel and I closed the club slightly. It allowed me to swing harder and for me they went really far, 280 or so damn near dead straight. I also have been using a little lagging clubhead takeaway which I like. The only problem that arrived was that I pulled a few, which I hardly ever do with a driver.

Curtis,

I do not need as much twist with the driver as the irons. I twist the most on short irons and wedges.

You will get pulls if you twist before you 'step on the left'.

I'm the opposite, I don't need it for my irons, just the driver. Is that strange?

I would say jbrunk is the strange one (sorry man :)) Generally the lower the loft the more twist is needed. Possibly jbrunk is more prone to laying off the shorter irons which is why he needs to twist more.
