swinging left/ line of compression?

i need a little help in understanding swinging left and clubface control. still have a bit of a tendency to hit a pull with a draw added to it at times.

i do feel i swing left(although at times my divots do go right) and i really should swing more upright rather than flattish. but when i do swing left, i also have a tendency to have the clubface go or close down to the left as well. So---while swinging left, should i make a real attempt to keep that face square to or facing the target more? is this what is called 'sustaining the line of compression'?

sometimes though i do get it right. when this happens i almost have the feeling of swinging left and just keeping a very open face, which i guess is in reality just aimed more at the target. I am on the right thinking path?
Thanks

To hit a straight shot - For example using an Iron assuming you are hitting down on the ball 3-6 degrees you would want the path slightly left (1-3 degrees) and the face sligtly closed (0.5 to 1.5 degrees). Read the D plane threads.

To hit a straight shot you need to have the net path at the target and the face at the target when the ball seperates from the face. As a rule of thumb you want your path to be half the amount that you hit down on the ball(with an iron) So if you hit 4 degrees down you need to swing 2 degrees to the left. This will have your net/resulant path at zero. You will also need to have the face at zero as well.

Mb6606 the example that you gave was correct with the path but you are suggesting that the face is closed. The result of the shot would be one that starts left of the target and then curves to the left.

Hopes this helps.

At set-up, path is determined by plane line which is an alignment skill. Face angle is determined by grip which is also an alignment skill. During the swing other factors affect the path. For this discussion, what affects the face? Homer Kelley talks about Accumulator #3. Looking for answers?

The face can also be affected by rolling open or closed with the wrist/hands and can also be affected by over/under rotating the left arm flying wedge.

No the ball would start left and then curve left. From what I read he is saying " using an Iron assuming you are hitting down on the ball 3-6 degrees you would want the path slightly left (1-3 degrees) " this would get the resulant path to be zero, which is the first part needed to hit a straight shot. The part that he gets wrong is "and the face sligtly closed (0.5 to 1.5 degrees)" If you have a zero for the path and the clubface is closed the ball will start left and curve left.

Thanks. I guess the big thing that occurs is that apparently I do close the face down at or before impact. I've just got to find a way to keep it what would appear or 'feel' to me to be open and then hopefully the face would actually be zero'd or pretty much straight.
