Takeaway Drills?

This is my first post to this forum. I appreicate any help that you can give.

I have a habit of picking the club up with the hands on the takeaway, which leads either to severely pulled shots or to weak high slices. When I consciously try to get my body turned properly, my hands get so deep that they get, as they say, stuck behind me and I end up with a severe in-to-out swing and the ball ends up OB to the right. Part of the cause of this was reading, a long time ago, Nicklaus's advice to reach as high as you can on the backswing. To get the club up high, I tend simply to lift it with my hands, and often to do this, my head goes up as well, leading to thin and/or fat shots.

I am trying to break this habit and am looking for a drill, or a thought key, that will enable me to pivot as I should and to keep the club on plane.

Thanks again.

RP, you are close with your below comment. Just try experimenting with bending your right elbow(righty golfer)which will get the height you need in your swing. Turn, bend. How fast you turn or bend and the combination is the key.............good luck

Also focus on how your hands and forearms work. If your forearms are rolling over on the backswing that can put the club a good ways behind you.

A good way to check this is in your backswing bend your right wrist straight back enough to flatten your left wrist..... When the wrists get in that position leave 'em there and complete your pivot. They should not be too inside if you pivot correctly, bend the right elbow as the above post states correctly and have proper wrist conditions.

Make it simple, natural and easy.

The degree of freedom (DOF) for the movement of the hands and arms is just too high to be controlled, which demands skills and practice.

I rotate my shoulders, which has the least amount of DOF, and intend to keep both arms straight in front of the body pointing the club to the plane line, which has no DOF, going back with enough speed and simply allow the inertia of the arms and club to fold the right arm to the side, turn the forearms, bend the right wrist and cock the left wrist on the top.

The "law" tends to keep it on-plane, yet people tend to interrupt it.
