Nah...

This was a good swing...but the 1960 swing was his best, and by '65 it was still way better than this.

1960 swing...

IN the 1960 US Open at Cherry Hills, the one that Palmer became "Arnie," Ben Hogan and Nicklaus were paired together for the 36 hole final day.

Hogan famously spun back an approach on 17 to lose the tournament.

When reporters ask him about the loss, he replied:

"There's a fat kid over there that should have won the tournament by 10 shots."

Hogan threw compliments around like manhole covers. He wasn't talking PUTTING, he meant Nickalus' ball-striking. Got it?

I'd pay some cash for a good sequence from this period...:)

For whatever reason, Nicklaus' swing changed, and by 1970, he had a reverse pivot.

In my mind, it contributed to his eventual hip replacement.

Brian,

Would you say his right hip has "backed up" a bit (i.e. hasn't kept the same angle at address)? Do you think it's got something to do with the wide stance?

candy cane?

If you traced out the movement of the right hip, it looks something like the whirl on a candy cane. This is due the the sharp turn of the right hip on the backstroke, followed by a shift toward the target or slightly to the right of target at start down, then followed by a spin or turn.

I agree that his right thigh is more angled (to the left) at the end-backswing position. However, that seems to a common phenomenon, which I can see in many golfers' swings eg. Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia and Ben Hogan.

Jeff.

In the sequence that Brian shows of Nicklaus, is there anything significant about how or why Jack replanted the left heel more forward than it was at address?
At address, his right foot is flared out substantially, and in the impact photo, his foot is less flared. It seems as if, Jack replanted his left heel more forward than it was at address.
Just curious if it matters.

This would probably be terrific unfortunately either Snead (heirs) or Nicklaus
have not allowed it's release.
