The head at impact?

I have been helping an Essex junior with his game and he has been coming on well. Today all the Essex kids had a teaching sesion with their Leadbetter and John Jacobs trained coaches. The kid I am helping has been beating the rest of the kids. They had a look at his swing today and this is what they came up with. The coach said that his head was behind the ball at impact and they said " THE HEAD "MUST" BE AHEAD OF THE BALL AND CLUB FACE AT IMPACT". I can not for the life of me get my head round this. I am confused . Am I missing something? What do they mean? Please clarify.

The coaches were very disappointed that his head was behind the ball at impact and they said it should be in front of the ball , I found this very hard to believe but his father said that is what they recomended. Brian: Could you go into how YOU like to see the head position at impact. The kid wants an answer from you to clear things up. This is the kid that talked to Craig Perks at the Open. Thanks.

I won't speak for anyone else, but take a look at the sequences in October Golf Digest of Ernie and Michelle Wie. Draw your own conclusions.
So far, I've not found an impact picture showing the head position past the ball. But thne I can't find Annika or David Duval.

Annika and Duval don't MOVE the head prematurely....they SWIVEL/ROTATE the head.......

Hello ragman. Sorry you thought that's what I was saying. Guess I didn't make my point clearly. I have not seen any pics of them at impact so I DON'T KNOW where their head position is, but I am well aware that they make a move somewhat differently from many others. That's why I added their names. If you misunderstood my point, I apologize for my sadly lacking ability to be clear.
Thanks for correcting such a gross error on my part.

Ragman is right...they don't have their heads any more to the left than any other great player does, their heads are just rotated differently.

the HEAD SHOULD ABSOLUTELY BE BEHIND! the BALL at impact and until the 2/3rds swivel.

I am going to talk to the kid later today about what was said as I find the advice given to be incredible. His father asked if the head should be further behand the ball at impact than say with a shorter club such as a wedge.Could I have an answer to this question please? As I see it there should be a degree of axis tilt set at address which increases with the bump of the hips left in the downswing but the head should stay in the same relative position and not go forward with the hip movement.

ukhacker: I live in East london " East Ham" although I will be building a house soon on a site I have in St Margarets Twickenham where I lived before. The kid I am helping lives in Forest Gate. I play most of my golf at Walton Heath and not very much in Essex I don't like Essex much.

Small world. I used to live in East Ham until I was around 13 when my parents moved out to Essex. I now live in a town called Rayleigh which is towards Southend. I know what you mean about Essex, but some parts are not too bad.

The kid and his father have asked me to send their thanks to you guys. The father said that I would say that the advice was crap . Thanks for the posts that help confirm this in the kid's mind. One thing I did notice with one of the Essex juniors is that his shoulders were level at address and his spine was almost vertical. He had very little hip bump at transition and as a result his head was more over the ball at impact. The kid that I have been helping has his trail shoulder lower at address than his left one and has more axis tilt at address and a 2" bump of the hips at transition. Maybe the Essex coaches like level shoulders at address but it looks wrong to me and that kid has a bad over the top rond house shoulder move. The kids father has asked me to ask Brian if the head should be more behind the ball at impact with the driver than with the shorter clubs such as a wedge. Thanks for all your posts.

Sorry but that advice just seems to be misplaced. Head even or in front of the ball on a full swing just doesn't translate into anything that would work well for a full swing IMO.

I guess stranger things have been said, sure this wasn't for some speciality type shot or a drill?

This is all more drivel from the "Troubleshooters" and their mindless little followers.

Ya'll stick around and I show you (and they will everyday) why I am the Best.

In Mike Hebron's book "Secrets & Lies" he has hundreds of photos of golfers taken for a period of more than 100 years. Not one has a head anywhere near being over the ball or ahead of it at impact. They ALL also have straight left wrists and bent right wrists at impact. From Old Tom Morris to Titanic Thompson to Patty Berg to Tiger.

Why was the instructor saying that you should be above or past the ball at impact with your head?
To promote hitting down? stop the RP?
