The midsole pitch

I've read a lot about the midsole pitch recently. Can someone please run down the basics of this shot? Is it played more often with the SW, LW or both? Is there a recommended amount of bounce for the shot (i.e., do you want high or low bounce wedges)? Thanks in advance.

I was out practicing this afternoon. Just for yucks I used my 50 degree wedge versus 54 or 58. I have been working on leading edge chips for about a month. So I thought I would mix in some mid-sole chips. I only know what I have read about them. In my case, I guess I have used this shot over the years, without ever really knowing that it had a name.

Square stance. Flat shoulder turn. All I did was move the handle back to just barely in front of the ball. My ball position is somewhat forward, definitely not back of center. Then execute the small pivot motion and brush the sole on the grass using the bounce. Finish with a left arm folding against left side, and keep the face from rolling closed.
It creates a higher shot than a lead edge chip. Open the face a little to apply some english and you can get it to stop quicker.
