I do now think it is funny that people are of the opinion that a ball can spin more than one way, or that a golf shot of over 200 yards has "topspin." If you think about it, it's completely "common sense" that a round, fairly solid object could only spin around one axis at a time. But, at some point I believed the "backspin & side spin" thing too.

As far as topspin, it also should be completely logical that a long golf shot doesn't have it. After all, if you watch someone hit a tennis ball "topspin" shot, the d#$m thing dives toward the ground over the net. If golf balls actually had topspin, they would crash into the ground 10-30 yards in front of the tee box.

Nevertheless, people still believe this stuff, I suppose.

True story, there were witnesses.

I saw someone hit their driver off of the tee on a par 4 with topspin. He closed the face of his driver so much and swung so far inside to out with the ball back in his stance that the ball literally duck hooked DOWN over the teebox. We went looking for his ball which actually went dead center cut of the fairway but could not find it. After 5 minutes we gave up the search completely puzzled. Why would such a short shot that was going right down the middle of the fairway be lost?

So he hit his 3rd shot and ended up some 270 yards down the fairway.

When we got up to the green, his first ball was there on the green 10 feet from the hole. He hit a 325 yard top spin drive onto the green.

I would never try to teach that though.

Did this happen in Bermuda by any chance?;)

No, Eagle Ridge GC is Redmond Oregon. 2 other witnesses besides myself and the player. Was the most bazaar golf shot I had ever seen. In a close second place was my one and only hole in one. Bladed a pitching wedge that hit the front embankment just short of the green, hopped up, took two bounces and went in. Best and worst shot of my career.

Are you guys serious? If a golf ball is airborne, it has backspin. If a golf ball did indeed have topspin, it would drop to the ground like a Bjorn Borg forehand.
