The REAL DOPE on shaft 'stiffness.'

The was a thread on—like they say—'another site,' about shaft stiffness.

The gist was that TGM/Homer says the 'stiffer the better.'

Really?

Here is the REAL DOPE on the subject:

ALL FACTS below....

Shaft stiffness is one thing, shaft frequency is another.

You can make two clubs with IDENTICAL STIFFNESS, but the one with the lightess head will have the HIGEST FREQUENCY and 'play' stiffer.

In any and every one shaft type (ie. dynamic, precision FM, rifle, project x rifle, etc), there is ONE BEST FREQUENCY for every golfer.

Here is the ONLY way that that frequency for a particular shaft can be found.

Test clubs have to be 'put together' where ALL the other variable remain the same, but the FREQUENCY CHANGES. Then the player must hit 'em all, blind test (don't know which one they are using), and the 'fitter'/observer will be able to tell which is best.

I talked to both HOT STIXS and GOLFING BY DESIGN about this at the PGA SHOW. They both agreed that this was the 'best' method, but would be hard to do due to cost. HG has a screw in system, but IMO needs more differenent frequency shafts at about 5 cycles apart to do the testing correctly. Bill MacDonald, CEO of HG, told me they could make up a fitting cart anyway you wish, so it CAN be done.

I have asked this question IN PERSON to people like BOB BUSH, and they all agree, that this (the above) is 100% true.

As far as "the stiffer the better".....not if you want it to perform the best for any particular golfer.

Like you said Brian, your method isn't the most cost effective or practical approach, although it would be ideal.

What's the next best option you would recommend?

Brian,
Do you still have your Swing Syncs?

How is Golfing by Design? I think they are based in NC,I have seen their tour vans around.

I'll agree with everything brian said above except i'd like to add one thing....

All shaft frequencies are not identical. Sometimes, due to feel/design/etc Company's A driver shaft at 265cpm's versus Company's B driver shaft at 265cpm's will not be the same.

Meaning that some shafts play softer/stiffer than normal even though the frequency says the same number. HOWEVER a good fitter will know that and take it into consideration when fitting you for the proper equiptment.

Check out www.4gea.com

Do a search on Dana Upshaw and fitting within the last 2 months.

He has a setup like Brian suggests. He defines the best frequency within 2 cpms. Uses every technology necessary to put you in the best shaft and head for your swing.

The posts are very interesting.

Jim...you are dead on, and I hope I didn't make it sound any other way.

A 257 in a dynamic gold PLAYS 23 cycles WEAKER than a Graphalloy prolauch 45, etc.

No i know you didn't but i just wanted everyone else to realize that 265 across the board isn't their "magic number" so to speak.

In one shaft, 265 is my magic number and in another 273 was.

I ran into this same problem, I thought 255 was my magic number but then found that when going from shaft to shaft that this number was totally useless. Put a accuflex evo on a freq. meter and it will prove these numbers are useless. You might get around a 245 with a regular flex evo and think it's a soft shaft but once you try to hit it you're in for a big suprise.
But it can give good info when comparing the exact same model in different flex's providing they have all been purred or floed but thats a whole different discussion.

I've had really good experiences with golfing by design. I've got a driver, 3 and 5 woods in my bag right now from them. Very happy with the work they did for me. I also bought a set of irons a while back from them but sold them after a few months. They were awesome clubs, just not exactly what I was looking for after playing with them for a while.

The guys there know there stuff and do a first class job with their fittings/clubmaking.
