The "stinger"

This is a quote from a teacher on how his student hits the "stinger"...

Basically you have to be able to steepen the attack angle and when you do that the sweet spot, the path of the golf club is moving out to the right so typically when guys get steep they hook it,”

If the idea is to reduce spin on a low launching/penetrating shot, wouldn't the best way to do it be to reduce the spin loft by dropping the dynamic loft and decreasing the angle of attack? It seems like steepening the attack angle is the opposite way to go for this shot. Am I way off on this?

it's a pretty easy shot.....probably my favorite. I used it on the course all the time when I'm frustrated with my swing

Maybe if you ask nice Tiger will tell you.

I've sent him an email, but no reply yet. :)

Seriously though... Is steepening the AA the way you chuckleheads hit this shot? Being one of the many who is trying to reduce their AA in general, can't the same shot be done with a shallow angle?

I used to just beat down on it and turn the face down. Now I try to keep more forward lean but with a shallower attack. I have to say the ball holds it's line better I think.

have you guys ever watched former flipper? i learned stinger through that video, not sure if it was a mistake

Catch it low on the face. Or skull it. That's my stinger. I don't do it on purpose though but it's fun to call it out after it happens, like I was trying to do it.

I use the same method when someone asks on the range were you aiming there, I say of course can't you tell.

Just throw a 1-iron in the bag and make your normal motion with it! :)

If I was playing a course that I thought I was going to have to hit a few low bullets on that's what I'd do. I never understood
the steep AOA approach to that shot either. Seems like lots of spin waiting to happen.

If you're playing a back foot punch shot, you can't help but have a certain amount of steepness to it, right? As long as you're plenty delofted the ball can't help but go low. As I often find myself in the trees I've become quite familiar with this shot. I just try to feel like I'm doing a Trevino impression. If it's a good lie I like Kevin's way best though.

The "stinger". I really don't know what that is.

I play 2 types of low trajectory shots,

#1-( my favorite) is extra club, slower swing with wide shallow attack which is a bit more from the inside (very quite pivot, armsy), obviously less spin. Say I have a160 yd shot to a back pin into a 10 mph wind, normally I would hit a 7 iron, but instead I take a 6 iron with a normal set up, swing slower and just pick/brush it from inside and shallow, baby draw.

#2- I use for low shots into the wind with shorter irons like a 115 yard 9 iron into a 15 mph wind to a flag tucked over a bunker. I play the ball back, lean left and trap it steeply ( aggressive upper torso pivot with drag). I will hit that to keep it down in the wind and still spin it.

That's just a basic description of the d plane from this teacher, no?

But as anyone who has played well in the wind will know you have to play it back in the stance and hit down steepish on it to play this kind of shot.

Ask Tuxen at AS2: "How should you hit a "stinger" a la Tiger Woods?

I would ask, but I think I'm over my question limit ...

they did measure his stinger with the orange box, so he knows the answer. Part of it is that the launch angle is less then 2degree

Less than -2* AoA for Tiger's stinger? Wow! I would have thought -6 or greater. I hit the stinger by playing the ball way back to deloft my iron and drill the clubface into the ground. Only way I can keep it low and feel like a powerful shot is delivered. Probably not the way to hit the shot. I aim well right to begin with so having the shot go left is what I want since my face angle is generally closed.

Frans said launch angle, not angle of attack. I too think Tiger is hitting at least -6AoA.

Whenever I'm hitting into the wind, ball back in stance and get steep, I always get too much spin and the ball launches low, but balloons quickly.

I like Lindsey's #1 above.

I think Tiger has a number 3. You can't get much less lofted than a 2 iron and the 2 iron is definitely not a short iron. He plays it for roll, yea? Maybe it has something to do with spin as well? Just guessing here, obviously.
