The Ultimate "Best swings of all time" thread

People talk about the best swings of all time.

But, is the best swing for Tiger or Hogan necessarily the best swing for you?

First, there are so many different body types. There are tall guys, short guys. Guys with short legs, guys with thick trunks, etc. The list goes on.

Even taking into account body types, a person's swing is a product of their total prior experience/knowledge on swinging a stick, either in golf or in other sports.

Bottom line: different strokes for different folks.

So without further adieu, let's introduce the ultimate thread on the best swing. A thread that attempts to take into account these factors.

=============================================

Who do you think has the best swing for a...
Tall person

Short person

Long swing

Short swing

Double shifter

Single shifter

Triple shifter

X-classification shifter

Fast swinger

Smooth swinger

Old person (over 70 years old)

Young person (under 16 years old)

An amateur

And also, the best swing for each decade from 1900 to 2010.

And any other category you would like to add to this list.

Heck, we had such a tough time deciding the best swing for just one golfer (Hogan), so this should be interesting!

Since there are not any ground rules as to what constitutes tall or short I'm just going to list my own and rate based on that.

I'll say for tall person (i.e. over 6'2")- Davis Love III, takes a wide stance with the driver and also hits his irons with a 3/4 swing.

Short person(i.e. under 5'9")- Ian Woosnam , very efficient motion

Long Swing-(past parallel)-Sam Snead

Short swing-(short of parallel)-Lee Trevino

Double Shifter-not sure I totally understand that term but I'll say Adam Scott

single shifter-Steve Elkington?

Triple shifter-did not know this existed

X-classification-is this from Mclean's x-factor? Tiger Woods?

Fast Swinger-definitely Price

Slow Swinger-Ernie Els, very unhurried and relaxed.

Old Person-Definitely Sam Snead

Young Person-(16 under)- The pre meltdown Michelle Wie was a pretty good action.

Amateur-currently I love Jamie Lovemark's action. Nice upright swing.

I'm very interested to learn what a triple shifter and X-classification is.

Oh for decades-
I'll say

1900-1910's-Harry Vardon

1920's-Bobby Jones

1930's-McDonald Smith -Thats when he played right?

1940's-Byron Nelson

1950's-Ben Hogan

1960's-Jack Nicklaus -the best version of his swing

1970's-Lee Trevino

1980's-Greg Norman

1990's-Steve Elkington or maybe Payne Stewart

2000's-Ernie Els

I only have one swing to input....and i don't care if is triple shift , double shift...it is, to me, the Rolls Royce of golf swings, harmonius, elegant, accurate and powerful...
If you haven't see it yet, i suggest you do, before putting up all these "other" names....

Mike Austin....period..:)

Not going to put up the whole list, I'll just pick and choose.

The best single shift is between David Toms and the 2000-2002 Tiger Woods.

The best triple shift is either Mayfair or Furyk.

The best under-16 swing is Michelle Wie at age 14.

The best smooth swing is Snead.

We keep fogetting one...

I've never seen George Knudson mentioned on this forum...Ben Hogan once said that he had "the best swing of his generation" (mid-60's to mid-70's)- that's good enough for me...His swing exemplifies the soft draw fundamentals as much as Sam Snead and Bobby Jones do. Brian would love this guy's action.

Others I would mention (aside from Hogan) would be: Gene Littler, Lee Trevino, Calvin Peete, Tom Weiskopf, Ken Venturi, Moe Norman, Mac O'Grady.

Among today's players: Anthony Kim, Lorena Ochoa, Annika Sorenstam, Sergio Garcia, Hunter Mahan.

mickey wright is the best overall but not the best in her decade(s)?

This topic is sort of meh. The best swing is the one that produces the best results for a given range of shots.

Who are the best drivers of all time?

Who are the best long iron players of all time?

Who are the best short iron players of all time?

The best wedge players?

Pretty is as pretty does :)

I like swings that the average weekend player can copy without practicing for 8 hours a day. I vote Annika for easiest swing to mimic.

This thread could go on for ever...until we have all see all the past players, there is always going to be a diversity of opinion....

Nobody has mentioned Roberto de Vincenso, yet he won about 200 tournaments....

Is there a more efficient short swing than JB Holmes? I'm surprised he hasn't had a single vote so far.
