The "X" Factor

C'mon fellas, I know you guys know this. Is this "X Factor" baloney or not? For some reason I was thinking BManz and crew said this was baloney. No? I just don't want to buy into a workout program that emphasizes something that isn't really there. Thx

Jamie Sadlowski

I thought X-factor was baloneyed also...

BUT...

I remember Jamie Sadlowski talking about X-factor on his You Tubed demonstration at the recent PGA golf show... (remember the cross handed 200 yard 6 iron?)

Makes you wonder...

I think what's up to debate about the X-Factor is whether or not it correlates to an increase in distance. I don't believe the studies conducted were conclusive.

McLean said it was about X-Factor in the backswing and then Cheetam said it was about X-Factor in the downswing and then Neal did a small study showing no definite correlation between max X-Factor stretch and increased driving distance.

Curtis, exercises could not hurt. Learning to seperate your torso from your lower body will help with achieving a proper kinematic sequence. Whether or not that turns into an increase in power, I'm not so sure.

Is this rubish? I was going to buy a workout DVD from Sean Cochran but then I just saw this recent article where he discusses the "X" Factor:

PGATOUR.COM - Golf Fitness Training to improve the "X" factor in the Golf Swing

I would never consider increasing your strength and flexibility to be a bad thing, but the "X Factor" is a tricky subject.

I think that creating a greater difference between hip turn and shoulder turn to start the downswing via a proper body movement sequence is one thing, but restricting hip turn in order to create a bigger "X Factor" on the backswing....I'm not a fan of that.

I tend to agree with this BPW, and I will tell you why. I have always swung like this since I really started playing at 35 and I'm now 44. I wasn't taught this, but I was always athletic and it just seemed natural. However I have always had back issues since I started playing, and I really think this swing has a big hand in that. Not quite sure how to change this, but I guess I need to figure it out or I won't be playing a lot longer:(

Here is what I think:

I think an average golfer trying to restrict their hips on the backswing is a good idea very, very rarely.

Anything I ever said about the x factor in the past was based on that.

The x factor stretch is a very desirable motion.

Rickie Fowler turns so much they had to call it Z factor.

Oh I'm defintitely going to work out, just trying to find a good program. Just didn't want to focus on something that is baloney when I could be doing a different workout.

PS Thanks for the replies fellas

If my memory is correct Sadlowski stated that his x-factor was the distance he was able to get between the shoulders and the hips on the downswing, or maybe even at impact, not on the backswing as Jim McLean had desired. I believe this was also stated by Johnny Miller on what he felt was where he got his power from (not saying he had any, I don't really know).
