thin divots again...

sorry to rehash this problem, but this still remains a problem. i'm sure a lot has to do with me not staying down through the shot. i've never seen this mentioned here so i'm not sure if this is a decent way to go about it. What if i were to think of making a divot after the ball? this seems to get me to stay down past the ball. but my concern is whether i should not be so ball focused, or should i be?
thanks for some clues.

Here is a drill for you to try...

Put two tees in the ground, with just the "heads" sticking up.

The first one, where your ball would be, the second, about two inches forward on the "target line."

Try to DIG the second one "out of the ground" without hitting the first one (where you ball would be).

When you can do it WITHOUT your head going forward of either in the process, replace the first tee with a ball, and try to take the second tee out again.

If you can, you'll be back to thank me.

that's what i was getting at. i can accomplish this well with my focus being on the forward tee even with the ball there. the question is whether or not this is really what i want to be thinking of when really striking the ball. thanks

Brian, from your experience, what would you say are the most common things that cause someone to not be able to "pass this test"...?

How bout things for both the setup and swing?

Root cause(s)?

Practice the drill Brian gave you and remember you are not the one staying down....it is the clubhead.

This is why he doesn't want you to move your head.

As far as a swing thought...use it for now until you get used to it.

So the question is WHERE should your Focus be....

First you need to FOCUS on hitting it with your PIVOT.

JUST HOLD ON, and AIM your hands.

Not really, maybe if you REALLLLY swayed off the ball but usually not.

People with bent left wrists and flippers have problems taking divots.
not following you jim, dont most flippers have bad pivots? and look at bmans answer, he said fix pivot, hold on and aim the hands. so what part of my "bad pivot" is not really?

Funny Video.

I have this video.

It is of a golfer WELL KNOWN for his ATTEMPT at a "head between the feet" Centered pivot.

He top/shanks the first one and hits the second fine.

The short version is on the TOP/SHANK his head starts CENTERED moves to the CORRECT location on the backstroke, moves back to the center (too far forward) and he LIFTS IT to create room and hits a NASTY TOP/SHANK.

The second one his head starts CENTERED moves to the CORRECT location on the backstroke, BUT REMIANS THERE (does not moves back to the center—too far forward) and he DOESN'T LIFT IT, because he DOESN'T NEED TO create room and hits it OK.

Funny how it works.

Moral of the story: don't start with your head too far forward and the ball too far back, you might TOP/SHANK it.

The Very First Thing I tell a beginner:

The divot has to be in FRONT of the ball, while the HEAD is BEHIND THE BALL.

"Homer, should the head be behind the ball at impact?" — Student

"Where else would it be??" — Homer Kelley with a typical wise crack answer
