Thin grips for a better release?

Players with large hands often use oversize grips. Is it possible that the release would be faster with thinner grips?

I try/want to use standard .580 grips (XL glove size), but it typically does me more harm than good. The two big culprits for me are tighter than normal grip pressure and a lot of re-gripping at the top. I'd like to just once own something that doesn't have and "X" in it's size.

try 0.900 :p

I feel you, bro :).

I wear a XXL glove myself, and I just had a midsize grip installed on my driver; first time over standard size for me. Have yet to hit balls with it, but it was a strange feeling making swings without the handle moving all over the place, especially in my lower hand.

I wear small cadets! :D Undersize Tour Velvets and one wrap of tape ftw!

I don't know where I'm going with this. It just feels more comfortable to have something I can actually wrap my hands around. HAH!

i'd argue bigger grips actually give you more feel. i've used the analogy of a go-kart wheel (small circumference) versus a bus wheel (large circumference). with the smaller wheel, it takes a much smaller hand movement to rotate x degrees, while with the larger wheel, it takes a bigger movement to rotate the same x degrees.

i'm having a lot of success with oversize grips even though i have smaller than average hands. just put a jumbomax XL on my driver as an experiment and am shocked how much better it feels.

I'd argue that it depends on the golfer :p I had a golfer gaining 5mph by using a oversized soft (winn dsi) grip and he used std. grips almost all his live. I had golfers gaining more control using std sized grips where they used to play oversized.

All grips on the fitting shafts are placed using compressed air, making it easy to change only grips during a fitting and then have the TM reporting back the consequences of such a change

I wonder how much a change like this is due to the amount of hand action, and how much is due to a change in swing weight? Does he weight difference between a standard and a larger grip affect swingweight enough to make a noticeable difference in how the golfer swings the club?

I have always played a fade, and I bought a Ping G20 driver at the end of last year and put mid-size grips on. ( I wear a xl glove ) I played a round and hit the biggest short, high slices ever in my life. I immediately hit my buddies old driver ( a driver I had given him ) and everything was back to normal. It could have been the driver itself, ( I didn't have a chance to demo it, my driver had just broke ) but I have a strong hunch it was the grips.

Or you could stretch a stnd size grip down the shaft to make it smaller. Sometimes this shortens the life of the grip though.

that makes sense. i am trying to build a swing that squares up the clubface without a lot of hand action. do you think there is any chance someone that gains more control with smaller grips might do so (at least in part) because they use their hands to square up the face?

that is excellent. pretty close to a controlled experimental environment. there's a lot of cool stuff you could test with that setup.

I think the anatomy of the hands dictates the size of the grip. For instance, a thin palm from front to back with short fingers can use an oversized grip to fill in the space created by the thin palm. Also with long fingers, you can use a standard grip if the fingers mostly clench the grip.

Also long or short thumb gripping will affect the grasp of the hands. It all depends on the space created between the grip and hands that must be filled. A large, fat hand may need an undersized grip!!

Since the finger gripping tension directly influences wrist joint articulation (because the finger tendons run through the wrist joint to the elbow connections), your release action is also influenced. A strong or weak hand position also influences release action.

Wonder when we will get a scientific study on the relation of the hand hold and positioning to release action and forces. There are so many variables it will blow us all out of the golfswing water... believe it.

For me the profile of the grip is important. I like Ping grips because the increase in circumference from bottom to top is greater than a lot of grips I have tried. As the clubhead starts to pull the grip seems to bed down into the left hand.
