This Drives Me Nuts

I got fixed awhile back by Mike Jacobs, then got a chance to show off for BM at golf school here in NY 6 months ago. My index is 6, used to be lower, and think I've got a handle on my BPS, but now can't hit my irons out of my own shadow. I can drive it fine (260 plus), but can barely hit 7 iron 150, when I used to hit it 165. I went to a NHA backswing and can keep it in front of me off the tee, but have to try and kill every iron to even get 75% distance. What eludes me is the effortless power I get with the big dog. Anybody ever have this problem? PS I'm really good in scrambles because I can drive and putt.
Thanks:(

Yeah, i used to have that problems too. I think the most important part in golf is to understand your own swing. Someday I hit my 8 iron 140 someday I hit it 155 lol. I think for me to be consistent is the symmetry of my swing. I always had a problem to swing left, then I watched manzella's video, he tells you to rotate your left elbow into your ribcage. So If i want to be consistent from right to left motion, i just pull that club with my shoulder which brings down my elbow close to my right pocket and then hit through the ball then go left with my elbow turning against my ribcage. I'm so sick of throwing the club away, i used to do that because i started to swing alot to the right. ball flight looks ok but i have absolutely no control of that stick!! Like Bman said you can't hit teh ball with just right side or left side, you have to use both sides of your body. I tried to hit baseball with jst my right arm, man that felt weak, then i tried to hit it with just left it feels weak also. but When i use both of my arms, it felt different, because I had all the power that I can have to hit the ball.

hopefully this helps.

Biggest reason why people hitting irons "short" but can still hit driver in their minds "fine."

Driver has very little loft and the attack angle is very shallow thus with enough swing speed; ball still goes far. Also; BPS works well for driver again because of the shallow angle.

Irons are harder because attack angle changes a lot and "true loft" changes a lot more because of how much more loft their is on the club. It is very possible that you are swinging so far inside/out with irons that you are delofting them to a point where they don't have enough spin to go the distance they should.

i would suspect that having the driver teed up also contributes to the disparity in distances between the driver and the irons.

Thanks Jim:
I am really good at swinging inside out, but I've been working hard with the Manzella towel plane board, and I don't touch it except targetside. One thing that does happen, quite often are the hosel rockets. Do you have any suggestions on some work I can do to try and fix this once and for all.

This sooooo me too...

I am in the same boat. I'm an underplaner, too... shallow, underplane, no divots, don't hit my irons a long ways, but easily one of the longest drivers at my club ....

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you hit your irons pretty high???

I started a post a few weeks ago about basically the same topic, but (opposite of Jim ;) ) I believe that underplane tends to add loft....

So what about guys who have lost distance completely? or maybe have a problem hitting the driver very far, but can hit the 7 iron great?

I used to have the high lefts, but basically the ball is medium trajectory and pretty straight...ha ha lucky me, straight and short.

I'm recanting - thinking about D-Plane ...

Been sitting here thinking - after the last poster says he hits it straight, and knowing that I hit it pretty straight and knowing that we are underplane, the D-plane tells me that our clubfaces have to be closed to our path to hit it straight. To me closed means less loft, so I recant about adding loft...

I must be flippin' to add my loft.

BPS

We have had some lengthy posts on BPS.

Hope Brian would chime in sooner or later.

This summer I went through major BPS.I thought I could fix it by getting better clubface control.More of a closed clubface to get the ball on line better.Twist away,NSA,SD didn't work.

My conclusion is this is a major waste of time. You got to fix the path or plane.I'm working in my basement on NHA and hope this is the ticket.

BPS + irons = UGLY!

No, sometimes I feel like I could hit off glass and not break it. I really don't feel good compression with any iron.

My favorite drill when things get goofy.

Get in a fairway bunker and dig a perpendicular line that represents ball positions. Stick the club in the valley you've dug. Learn how to bust out the left side of the valley while not hitting the back side.

It will change your path for the better.

You are way out to right field now.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm in concrete jungle land, NY. Got another way maybe indoors with a mat?

They have lots of swing speed to compensate for all the loft they are adding at impact with irons. Could be poorly fit irons too.

Only if you hang the face open and most under planers are hookers (most, not all) thus underplane won't be adding any loft. What u r probably confusing is that most under planers have a lot of axis tilt and introduce a lot of launch angle to their shots. Launch angle and adding loft are not the same thing

I used to live in a concrete jungle myself, but found that the local school's long-jump pit was a good place to do cmartins excellent drill.
