Through-Line Etiquette?

Playing with the weekend buddies, we just avoid each other's the direct line on the green but I see pros avoiding other player's through line past the hole as well. What's the protocol for this? Do you give 2 feet past, 3? More? Do most of you employ this in your regular friendly outings?

i always try to give the hole as much room as possible. never within 4-5 feet or so until i have a short putt, etc.

When playing with weekend buddies don't worry about the through line. I would say a general rule of thumb is about 6 feet. As the level of play gets better, guys increasingly fret about it. From someone who has played in everything from club championships to national amateur tournaments, mini tours and section events, the first time I noticed guys worrying about it is at the state amateur level.

I watch out for it and do expect people to watch for mine...doing it on purpose would be gamesmanship.

If you think about it though these greens get walked on all day long. To me, there is no way you have "approached a perfectly uniform putting surface only to have it ruined by one guy's footprint."

I guess there is something about watching someone do it though.

The first time I've ever heard of this was a week or two ago when Zach Johnson didn't tap in a close putt and the announcers said he would have been on another players through line. I don't think it's a big deal. It's your own damn fault you missed the first putt.

However, I'm not a fan when someone walks on my "initial" line. I won't say anything unless it's my wife. It surprises me when a good player walks around not even aware of what they are doing.
