Thumb underneath the club on the backswing

If you swing the club back with your thumb undereath the club at the top, assuming you had a correct grip, you are in a position that has your clubface pretty close to square, what is called "hanging on the plane" and your wrists are properly set to get the good lag and pop on the ball.
