Hogan's 3 wood was a different animal than the modern metal 3, not sure how you can compare the clubs. Venturi, Dickinson and Nelson have described Hogan as taking a divot when using a fairway wood, off the turf. I have never read anything regarding his frequency of using a 3 wood off the tee. Snead was noted to take divots with his driver, in his last book he notes a tiny divot taken when he was driving well, as he hit down on the ball significantly.
I saw a Jackie Burke video at SITD and he talked about how Hogan and the guys back then thought they had to "spring the shaft" by hitting down on the ball and taking a divot with the fairway woods.
