Correct me if I wrong but this low shot from tiger is the definition of the D-plane



Or he just got to it by trial and error...

the deep rough combined with using a long iron will keep the ball low for anyone; the rough gets between the ball and the club and reduces the spin rate.

But don't you think that even with water left it looks like, as Chilli alludes to, he has neutralised the out aspect of the down by swinging a bit left?

Tiger could probably hit that shot and a few others when he was a junior. Long before anyone knew about the d plane etc. Like any kid playing a game you learn by trying things on the course or practising on the range, of course he had his dad show him a few things and i'm sure he was curious about how do you do that shot and many others. Show me how and i'll take it from there. He could remember if i do this, i get that, if i like that, i keep doing that. Trial and error i believe, skill development, till it's a habit, then you own it.
