Over use of "The Stinger" is what got him in so much trouble.

On the Golf Channel's "round table" discussion, Johnny Miller made some comment that if he were Tiger's coach he'd have him hit nothing but stingers off the tee. He said Lee Trevino told him that if you are choking, just hit it low because there's less chance to get into trouble.

It seems to me he uses that shot more when he is playing well e.g. throughout 2000 and during the 2006 Open.
