Tommy Watskin Ballflight

Anyone know what kind of shot Tom Watson was predominantly playing this past weekend? I didn't watch the tournament really.

Thanks yas.

Yep, it was his ability to hit low drawing drivers into the left to right wind (plus some amazing putts) that put him into the great position he was in on Sunday. But he could also cut it against the wind. And in my opinion, when you are playing in 25mph of wind on a links course, there is no such thing as a predominant ball flight. You've got to work every shot so it holds against the wind.

That's just a light breeze. ;) (don't think it was even 25mph to be honest! Just a cross wind)

I heard that Tom Watson gave some advice to some of the younger players on how to play links golf. The basic essence of his advice was not to alter their natural shots. Don't try different shots, but try and make as solid of contact as possible.

I agree completely! It was just a light breeze, but the last time I said something on this board about it not really being windy until it was up over 35mph (and then talked about playing in 50mph wind) lots of folks gave me a hard time. But I played week in and week out through two winters in Wales, so I have at least a little bit in the way of credentials. :D:D

The last Pro-Am I played on a links was in a real wind, my brother who doesn't lack length managed to hit 3 wood a grand total of 90 yards into the teeth of it! I watched it come backwards. Breaking 80 was an achievement.

Tom is just a fantastic links player, shapes it, hit it better not harder which is key.

Yes he was taught this by Byron Nelson who observed that the purer the ball was struck the less wind effected it a lesson to be learned.
