Trackman - Perfectly Straight Number for a Single Shot

Has anyone ever had a 0.00 Face Angle and 0.00 Club Path on Trackman for a single shot?

I've never had both FA and CP at 0.00 (or even 0.whatever) for a single shot. I can come close every now and again to 1s for each, but I've never had both FA and CP at 0.00 for one shot. I'm more in the 1-3 range for my face and 1-2 for my club path. It's easier for me to hit a pull draw and I'm working on a push draw.

I've hit about 500-600 shots on Trackman. It was interesting watching Luke Donald on Trackman with his wedge and he didn't have 0.00 either.

I only raise this issue for discussion purposes and I know that Brian and his crew and have never advocated that such numbers are attainable. Plus, the shot can appear straight even if the numbers are in the 2-3 range (obviously a pull and push could have the same number). I'm not sure where the discussion will lead, but maybe something productive will come out. If not, sorry for the post.

From one of previous Trackman newsletters:

"Of all the tour pro data I have ever seen, Jim Furyk is the one with the most consistent club path and face angle (about 0.4 degrees in consistency with his driver), and in addition Furyk’s average club path and face angle for the data I have seen are exactly 0 degrees. I am convinced that this is one of the reasons Furyk is always in the top rankings on fairways hit. Many of the tour pros are far from Furyk’s 0 degree club path/face angle standards."

Cheers

With irons, I've gotten 0.0 paths many times (usually a few per session). I've gotten 0.0 face angles many times (a few less than the path per session). But the closest I've got for both on the same shot was 0.0 path with 0.1 face. It's happened a couple times, but the elusive double ott has become my white whale. At the end of a session I like to take a 5 ball run at the "high score", but so far it's a whiff.

With the driver, always on the + side of zero for both. We'll leave it at that.

Close enough!

I've told people many times that it's much easier to feel path changes than face angle changes on Trackman. Much easier to bring wild paths down and feel a good path on a consistent basis. Face angle? Much, much harder.

It's scary how much one can dial in their swing while on Trackman.

0.0 Path and 0.0 Face does not necessarily mean you hit a good shot. You could top it or have serious gear effect at work.

IMO, 0.0 Spin Axis with a high Smash Factor is a waaaay better goal.

I hit a driver shot a year ago when getting fitted for my current oil filter on a stick and I had Attack Angle -0.1, Path 0.2, HSP 0.1, Face -0.6, Spin Axis -0.7, Smash 1.49. Ended up 3.4 yards left. Right after I hit that shot I knew it was the right one for me.

I think in order from hardest to change to easiest (yeah, yeah, I know some numbers go into making up the other numbers like AoA and swinDir and VSP all go into Path, but...) on an individual level: AoA, VSP, FA, Path, Swing Dir (HSP), Spin Axis

BUT once you get AoA optimized and consistent everything (except FA) is much easier to manipulate & easily changes based mainly on the shot you want, but also on ball position, distance from ball, weight transfer, etc etc.

My Guess: Whoever has a reasonable AoA & controlled the FA the best... That's who hits the most greens week in, week out.

Also, I've seen Brian get straight 0.X's (for path and FA) with 0.0 or +\-0.X spin axis several times in a row with my 6iron (oh yeah his AoA was spot on too 3.8 to 4.1)... into a left-right wind no less, ball finished about 10-15 yards left and he called it.

I have gotten "quad-zeros" about 5 times in 3 and a half years, but only have gotten what I call "straight zeros" a couple of time.

"Straight Zeros" is +or- 0.X° face and path, and +or- 0.X° spin axis, side, side total, launch direction, and SPIN AXIS.

David Toms has done it when we have been working dozens and dozens of times.

Below is a screenshot that was I shot I hit for my Golf Magazine feature article. "Straight Zeros" except for SPIN AXIS.

Rats.

Good shot though....

Brian -

I would call that shot above straight zeros! Why is the face to path difference .1 instead of .2?

.2 feet left! Now that's a straight shot. I like the term "quad zeroes" for my post. I thought it's very hard. I would take "straight zeroes" all day long!!!

I can generate a club path from 0-2* very consistently if I "feel" like I push the clubhead a little to right field near the bottom of my swing. I never, ever would have made such a move without Trackman showing me my path without such move. If I don't push my clubhead a little to right field (that's the feeling) I get negative path numbers (and generally a closed face - which is why I played pull draws most of my life until recently).

Pfft...whatever, who needs these science machines!?

Brian, where were you feet aiming in relation to the target, when you hit the shot, thanks.

Brian ... it must be very pleasant working with reliable numbers based on legitimate science. Science demands numbers to reveal reality and the truth. Now you have both with Trackman and Project 1.68 for your instant feedback analysis and teaching. The confusion of TGM must be a distant memory now, and a world of difference to the present day. You are now like a happy kid with neat toys.... ;)
