Trackman

Ping is having a demo day in my neighborhood Friday.

Bringing trackman with them.

I'm looking forward to getting on it and finding out my personal digits !

I'm gonna get a copy to keep so I can have on file.

I notice the pros seem to really be launching it low these days 10-12 degrees of launch angle.I think the manufacturers want 15-16 degrees of launch?

That's probably due to the higher speeds they produce. I don't think you'll see too many pros launching their drivers at 15-16 degrees because of that. Most of us regular folk need a higher launch angle to maximize carry with our slower swing speeds.

well my frend went with a friend to the ping national fitting centre in England which isnt that big a trip from where i live.

they have trackman.

Can't remember perfectly right now but they have two versions of trackman:

V1 tracks the ball i think the first 20-30 yards or something like that and uses an complex algorithm to predict the remainder of the flight. I believe this version is around $25k

V2 tracks the ball the whole flight and does the same thing as V1 (just tracks the whole flight) and i believe it's between $45-$50k

There is a new tracking device and software called Flightscope Kudu by edhsport. Supposed to rival Trackman, but at a much lower cost. 8 to 10K if I'm not mistaken. It has been named the official 3D Doppler Tracking Radar at the 2008 PGA Fall Expo. I've seen some screen shots and it is impressive.

I could have sworn trackman was in the neighborhood of $160K for the best version. Ballistics-caliber dopler radar.

LOL...someone must be pulling a funny on you. The people who designed trackman actually originally used the doppler radar functionality to track missiles and projectile flight and just simply adapted it to the ball flight of the golf ball.

The "pro" version or whatever they call it of the trackman is around 50-60k and comes with the panasonic toughbook laptop.

I hope this might bring a change to the TV broadcasting as one of the things that you cannot see enough is the flight of the golf ball. I wonder if they could somehow adapt the technology to track the golf ball to somehow and give it a subtle highlight to make it easier for the viewing audience to watch where the ball goes. Not nessesarily that big line that they show at the moment...

They have done this sparingly on CBS broadcasts throughout the year with iron shots, called the "pro tracer" and they have done some with driver trajectories (only seen it a few times) on the golf channel coverage of the thurs/friday days of the tourney.

Search youtube for "pro tracer" and maybe you'll find someone recorded it

You can definitely feel that this is going to make watching golf on tv much more exciting. I can't get enough of that stuff! This will also probably bring a lot of admiration for the guys like Tiger, Sergio, etc etc who hit the ball with all sorts of different shapes!

Brian, Jorgensen's book has been around for awhile. Why all the interest in the D plane now? Has it evolved since his book or has this been covered here before?

UPDATE

Got Trackmaned this afternoon.

My current driver 10 degrees of launch angle with spin of 1800-2000.

I went to this set up because I was putting too much spin on the ball previosly and also launching really high.Conclusion- I went too far.

Ping would like to see me 13.5 and 2600-2700.

They did feel that my numbers were better then putting too much spin on the ball.

P.S.

They also told me my irons were 2 degrees too upright for me.

Wow. Those are awesomely low spin numbers. How did you get them that low? What was your swing speed and ball speed during that? And what driver, shaft, and ball were you using?

Pumkin Range Balls

Ping Rapture 9 degree with Aldila green NV shaft.

Swing speed was 95-98 mph.

Carry was 216 and did not get the ball speed.

I was very disappointed and some what embarressed by the carry distance.Ping said hey these are range balls and that is carry only.

I felt much better because a local country club pro hit after me and his carry numbers were similar to mine although he was putting about 3800 rpm of spin on the ball.

What I've concluded from all this is the following:

When I played a fade and put more spin on the ball this driver set up was good.
Now that I'm playing the SD 1.0 pattern I'm not putting as much spin on the driver and need more loft and a little more higher flight.

My drives don't stay in the air quite long enough.

I don't mean to rain on your parade BUT "real balls" will spin more. Range balls tend to be worn, especially the dimples, which will tend to read lower spin numbers.

Also most range balls tend to not produce as much ball speed as a real ball. With 95-98mph you shouldn't have much trouble producing carry distances around 235-245 if optimized correctly.

Hi Brian. I had to join after our conversations at the AMF Summit. Thanks.

TrackMan Pro costs $28,000 USD and tracks the golf ball for it's full trajectory. I have tracked Long Drive Competitors for shots over 350 yards.

TrackMan Launch costs $16,600 USD and is used when the ball flight is less than 60 yards because of a net or other that terminates the ball flight early. It will track the ball for whatever distance is available and then calculate the remainder of the ball flight.

Both Pro and Launch use the exact same hardware and the Launch system can be upgraded at any time. Outdoor hours can be purchased on Launch for temporary use outdoors as well (giving it all of the Pro capabilities).

There are other solutions that are used by the engineers at all of the major equipment manufacturers, but are not something that a fitter, teacher or other would need unless they were doing some serious research. The prices on these solutions will vary depending on what the engineer is trying to do.

Fredrik Tuxen is the CTO and designer of the TrackMan radar. He came from one of the top defense contract companies in the world. The defense company has had many contracts with the US and other countries in regards to Doppler radar and missle defense.

I hope that clears up a couple things.
